Delaware River Report / Conditions August 6, 2020

The flows throughout the system have dropped dramatically as the runoff from the rain subsides.  The lower West Branch out front looks fine this morning and is running clear.  We’re coming off a cool night and should only see the temp rise to high 70’s today.  We’ll see a mix of clouds with less than 1/10″ of rain overnight.  The change in the weather is going to be great for the rivers.  Definitely have your olive box ready along with your small sulphurs.  Hopefully the cooler weather and cloud cover pushes the isonychia hatch earlier in the day.  We have been seeing more caddis over the last week too.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 5, 2020

We had the rain yesterday but luckily not all of the wind that was in the forecast.  The river flows are up but are already dropping back this morning.  The Hale Eddy flow is already under 900 cfs this morning and is dropping quickly.  The rivers will clear as they drop too.  The lower West is off color from the feeder streams but should look better by the afternoon.  There is enough visibility to streamer fish this morning and if there are enough bugs the fish will rise.  It may not fully clear until tomorrow but overall it came through just fine.  Stilesville is steady at 470 cfs so the river should look good above Oquaga Creek.  The Eastern drainage is a bit bigger so it will take longer for the runoff to filter through.  We’ll see 78 degrees today with a mix of clouds and sun.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the West.  This will help dry things out a bit.  There is no additional rain in our forecast until Friday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 4, 2020

At 6 am we are just seeing a small bump in flows from the rain.  We should see rain all day with the heaviest amount falling in the afternoon.  We could see between 2″ and 3″ of rainfall.  We are in a flash flood watch – most likely for the small feeder streams.  Wind will be 10 – 20 mph switching from the South to the North.   The air temp will  only hit 70 degrees today as the storm passes through.  If we see significant changes in flows we’ll do an update this afternoon but keep an eye on the latest flows by clicking the gauge links below.  If you head out today be careful.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 3, 2020

No pulse release from Cannonsville so the flows are steady and close to where they were yesterday.  The air temp should hit 83 degrees today which also puts us right where we were yesterday.  According to Wunderground we should see “considerable” cloudiness with wind 5 – 10 from the West.  The rain in today’s forecast should start until well after dark.  Tomorrow is the day with well over an inch of rain predicted but watch that report- they’ve been changing our forecasted amount over the last few days.  Check the latest weather reports and check the gauges a lot tomorrow. We’ll do multiple updates if conditions change throughout the day.  Sulphurs and olives with a few isonychias and caddis will cover your need today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 2, 2020

We had a little rain overnight but not enough to bump the flows as of 6 am.  The total rainfall for the day should be around 1/10th” but there are some thunderstorms in the area that could drop more.  The ground is still dry despite the rain over the last few days so any precip. will probably get get absorbed.  Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South and the air temp will be 86 degrees.  The cloud cover is great though and it looks like a good day to be on the water.  Just keep an eye on the radar.

Definitely have some lives handy along with your small sulphurs.  Caddis and a few isonychias have been around and hopefully show up today with the good weather.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 1, 2020

They did another brief pulse release from Cannonsville last night but the flows are already dropping back at 6 am this morning.  We’ll likely settle back in the 450- 500 cfs range at Stilesville.  Today’s weather looks a lot like yesterday.  We’ll see a few clouds but mostly sun with the air temp reaching 85 degrees.  No wind and a 10% chance of precipitation.  So the first August report of 2020 is going to sound just like most of July.  Midday go up close to the dams in the coldest water for the best shot at dry fly fishing.  If you stay lower the best timing for dry flies will be early and late.  The lower WB will be better for nymphing because of the algae in the upper river.  We have a higher chance of some precipitation tonight and tomorrow but it shouldn’t be enough to affect flows.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 31, 2020

We were hit by a couple of different rain bands yesterday.  None of the storms lasted long but we did see some heavy rain for a bit.  It’s been so dry the ground soaked it up again so there is no real change to the river flows this morning.  Luckily there was no pulse release from Cannonsville last night so flows are steady.  Today will be a couple of degrees warmer at 84 degrees with a bit more sunshine.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.  Sulphurs and olives have still been the main hatches.  We are seeing some isonychias and stenacrons / cahills out there.  The numbers of caddis on the water seems to have increased over the last few days and we have found fish eating them.

Yesterday’s 20% chance of storms turned into 100% after dinner last night.  The rain came down hard for a bit but mostly soaked in the ground so no real flow change.  It was definitely needed though.  Today looks like a great day to be on the water with the air temp only hitting 81 degrees, some cloud cover, and 4 – 5 mph wind from the West.  There is a 40% chance of some afternoon storms but the total rainfall predicted is less than 1/10″.  They did not pulse release from Cannonsville last night probably due to the cooler air temp and potential rain.  That’s great news because the pulses are kind of annoying and don’t really do any good for the river anyway.

Another night and another pulse release from Cannonsville.  The flow at Stilesville peaked around 650 cfs but is already dropping back this morning.  The flow should drop back to where we’ve been with a release around 460 cfs.  It’s a little cooler this morning and the water temps have dropped a couple of degrees.  It’s going to get warm again and we’ll be at 86 degrees this afternoon.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South with a slight chance of an afternoon thundershower.  So the fishing should be about the same with the daytime activity closer to the dams and a shot at dries early and again in the evening on the lower West.

The lower Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem temperatures are all peaking over 70 degrees.  Give those rivers a break until they cool down.

There was another quick pulse release from Cannonsville overnight.  It looks like the flow at Stilesville peaked around 680 cfs but it is already dropping back this morning.  Today will be cooler with the air temp reaching 83 degrees with some cloud cover.  The chance of rain dropped to 30% with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  There were some storms last night but most of them slid North of us and we barely got enough rain to wet the ground.  so the fishing is the same with some action on the lower West in the early morning and after the sun drops.  Otherwise nymphing is your best bet.  Daytime head up closer to the dams in the colder water.

There was another brief overnight pulse release from Cannonsville.  The flow is still up on the West Branch as of 6 am but it has peaked and should drop quickly as it filters down to the Mainstem.  It’s going to be warm out there with the air temp hitting 92 degrees.  We will have a few clouds and 10 mph wind from the South but plan on mostly sun.  So the forecast changes nothing.  The best shot at dry fly fishing will be closest to the dams in the coldest water.  There will be algae on the Upper West so if you want to nymph stay lower to let it filter out.  Tomorrow we cool down a bit back to the low 80’s.

The was a quick short lived pulse release from Cannonsville again overnight but it looks like the flows have peaked and begun to drop back to normal.    It will take a bit for the slug of cold water to filter down the West Branch and into the Mainstem where it really doesn’t do much good anyway.  It’s cool on the river this morning with some fog that will give way to sunshine with a few clouds.  The air temp will hit 88 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the West.  So it will fish the same as it has for the last couple of weeks.  The best shot at dry fly action will close to the dams in the coldest water.  Small sulphurs, olives, and maybe a few flying ants will cover most of what you’ll see.  Nymphing will be better on the lower West since the pulse from Cannonsville probably knocked a bunch of algae loose up top.
