Delaware River Report / Conditions October 26, 2018

We’re starting off a little cold this morning but we should warm up to 45 degrees by mid afternoon.  We’ll have sun for most of the day with light winds.  A front will move in overnight bringing 1/4″ of rain.  That shouldn’t happen until after dark.  We’re in for more rain tomorrow but the amount in the forecast has been changing.  The West Branch is still coming out of Cannonsville at 1,500 cfs and off color.  It’s probably the best place to throw streamers.  The lower East Branch and Mainstem will be clearer and look better for small olives and caddis fishing.  Keep an eye on the long, slow tailouts for your best shot.  If you’re wading concentrate on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.

The Upper West Branch from Cannonsville Dam to Monument is closed.  The East Branch from Pepacton Dam to Shinhopple Bridge is also closed.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 25, 2018

We have cloud cover and a little wind this morning.  Looking at the hourly forecast the wind should stay 10 mph or below out of the North.  We’ll be a little cooler today with the air temp peaking around 40 degrees.  The West Branch is still coming out of Cannonsville at 1,500 cfs and off color.  It looks like the best bet for streamer fishing.  We are seeing olives and caddis out there.  The East Branch and Mainstem are your best bets for dry fly fishing or nymphing.  It looks like the weather warms up again over the weekend.  We do have some rain in the forecast but the amount predicted seems to be changing daily.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 24, 2018

Yesterday was a pleasant one on the water.  We had a bit of rain and the wind was bad when the front came in but that didn’t last too long.  We should have sunshine today with a high of 44 degrees.  The wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.   For dry fly fishing concentrate on the lower East Branch or Mainstem.  The West Branch is still coming out of Cannonsville off color and looks good for streamers this morning. There are enough leaves left on the trees that it’s possible to get out of the wind.  The best wade options are the Willowemoc and Beaverkill.

Keep in mind the Upper West Branch from Cannonsville Dam to Monument is closed.  The East Branch from Pepacton Dam to Shinopple Bridge is also closed.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 23, 2018

Today looks like a good day to be on the water.  We should see an air temp of 53 degrees, a light rain in the afternoon, and wind from the south 5 – 10 mph.  The rain should only amount to .14″ so we shouldn’t get too wet but should have good cloud cover all afternoon.  Streamers in the morning but it does look like a good olive day.  Watch the slow tailouts and edges in the afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 22, 2018

Yesterday was windy with some sleet thrown in for good measure.  There were some decent periods in there and luckily there was no accumulation.  Today we’re back on a warming trend.  We should see sunshine, winds 5 – 10, and an air temp approaching 50 degrees.  That’s probably the best conditions you can  ask for at the end of October.  Caddis and small olives will be your best bet for dry fly action.  Watch the long slow pools.  We still have quite a bit of water out there.  The fish will set up in the slower water.  The caddis eats will be sporadic since they won’t be on the water with any consistency.  If you see a one timer it’s definitely worth throwing too this time of year.  Streamer fishing will probably be the most effective method.  Change colors and sizes until the fish tell you what they want.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 21, 2018

We woke up to some decent wind with a little rain this morning.  Some of the higher elevations in the area have seen a little snow but so far we’ve been lucky.  Wind gust will be around 20 mph and the air temp should only hit 37 degrees so dress appropriately.  It’s going to be colder for the next couple of days but we should see a slight warmup on Tuesday.  Streamer fishing is probably your best bet with today’s winds.  There are still enough leaves on the trees that you may find a few protected areas.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 20, 2018

Yesterday was one of the nicest days we’ve had in quite a while.  Maybe a little too much sun for the fish but it was a great day to be outside.  It looks like Pepacton has stopped spilling.  The water temps throughout the system climbed with yesterday’s heat and are starting off higher than normal this morning.  The Beaverkill is down to 589 cfs at Cooks Falls offering decent wading.  The West Branch is still coming out of Cannonsville off color but has been fishing okay with streamers.  Olives, caddis, and a few isonychias are being seen on other river sections.  Today will be warm again with some light rain moving in during the afternoon.  the rain / clouds may help the dry fly fishing.  We should see less than 1/4″ of rain by tomorrow morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 19, 2018

We’re starting off with a good frost this morning with an air temp in the low 30’s.  By mid afternoon we should have sunshine and an air temp of 57 degrees.  Today looks like a good afternoon to hunt the mainstem for fish eating olives in the slow pools.   Give it a chance to warm up.  Streamers are still a good bet on the West Branch since it is still coming out of the dam off color. The Beaverkill / Willowemoc are in the best shape for wading.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 18, 2018

The sun popped out for a bit yesterday and felt good with the lower air temp.  The wind was off and on but wasn’t too bad for most of the day.  The river flows are still dropping slowly as the feeder streams continue to drop.  We are still finding olives, caddis, and a few isos in the longer pools.  Otherwise streamer fishing has worked well on the West Branch.  Today is going to be cooler with sunshine.  We’ll warm back up a bit tomorrow and have a slight chance of rain on Saturday.

We have cloud cover now with some rain coming around lunch time.  Total precipitation should only be around 1/10″ so we should come through just fine.  Olives and caddis are making up most of the bugs we’re seeing out there.  There are still some isonychias but we’ll see fewer as the temps drop.  The West Branch is still coming out of the dam off color and looks geed for streamer fishing.  Keep in mind the Upper West Branch from Cannonsville Dam to Monument is closed.  The East Branch from Pepacton Dam to Shinopple Bride is also closed.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 16, 2018

We had light rain and clouds for most of the day yesterday.  The rivers look good this morning abut are slightly higher.  The Beaverkill flow is under 1,000 cfs and along with the Willowemoc offers the best wade opportunity.  The West Branch is still off color from the release but we are catching fish up here.  Streamers to start with but there is a chance of dry fly action in the evening.  The Mainstem is in great shape and has had most of the hatching.  We are coming off a night in the low 30’s so it will take a bit for everything to warm up today.  We should see 50 degrees and sunshine by the afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions October 15, 2018

Yesterday was a decent day to be on the water.  Small olives and caddis were the main patterns we needed.  Streamers worked well early on other sections. The cloud cover was decent with a few patches of sunshine thrown in.  We have clouds this morning with 1/4″ of rain coming throughout the afternoon.  It looks spread out over most of the day so we shouldn’t see any isolated heavy periods of rain.  Olives, caddis, and a few isonychias should cover your dry fly selections.  The West Branch is still off color so streamers are a good choice there.  Water levels are still high so the best wading opportunities are on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc.
