Delaware River Report / Conditions June 13, 2018

We woke up to some light rain this morning.  Looking at the hourly forecast it should be off and and on light rain throughout the day.  It’s been a while since we’ve seen any rain so the 1/4″ we’ll see by tomorrow morning will soak into the ground.  The release from Cannonsville Reservoir is still listed at 460 cfs but the Stilesville gauge shows 518 cfs.  We’re in great shape for wading and floating.  The light rain and cloud cover should help the fishing today.  Besides the olive hatches, the weather should push the other hatches a little earlier in the day and make the fish feel more comfortable eating mid afternoon.  We had sporadic hatches during the day yesterday but the wind was stronger than the 5 – 9 mph in the forecast.  March Browns, cahills, and caddis were around in the sunshine but the mayflies got off the water quick and it seemed the fish were hesitant to stay up.  Nymphing or swinging wets was definitely the way to go until the sulphurs hatched in the late evening.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 12, 2018

Yesterday fished well but the timing was a little unpredictable.  There were some clouds rolling through but for the most part we had sunshine most of the day.  Despite the bright sun the best hatching and activity we saw was mid morning to mid-afternoon.  There were sulphurs, caddis, cahills, and a few green drakes and march browns coming off.  The fish were on them pretty good for a couple of hours.  Later in the afternoon we still had a few bugs hatching but you had to hunt for fish eating on top.  It fished, it was just a little backwards from what we would have predicted with the weather.  Today will be similar to yesterday with fewer clouds.  The air temp will reach the low 70’s.  Winds will pick up in the afternoon to around 10 mph and then drop back in the evening.  Tomorrow looks great with clouds and some rain totaling about 1/4″.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 11, 2018

The clouds stuck around all day yesterday.  The sulphur hatches are getting stronger but the timing as been dependent on which river you are fishing.  Some people are reporting huge numbers of sulphurs in the afternoon while others are seeing them in the evening.  Cahills, caddis, and March Browns should round out the menu.  There are still Coffin Flies at night.  We’re seeing some early but the guys who are staying out real late are getting some big payoffs.  They’ve been on some rivers for a while now and should be slowing down.  You may run into some Brown Drakes after dark.  Today looks like a totally different day with an air temp near 70 and sunshine.  Winds should be negligible.  That may push the hatches a little later in the day but the caddis should be happy in the sun.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 10, 2018

We’re hearing mixed reports from yesterday.  The bright sun and warmer weather seems to have moved the main hatches into the evening.  There are still caddis and a few mayflies offering some daytime opportunities but nymphing and swinging wet flies in the riffles should produce best when the sun in out.  The flows throughout the system are about the same as yesterday morning and the river temps are all starting off only a degree or two lower than than yesterday morning.  The last few days have been described as “mostly cloud” by Wunderground.  We basically had a periods of sun and come cloud cover.  Today they describe as “cloudy” so hopefully the sun doesn’t show.  There are still a lot of different bugs on the water so be prepared.  Some sections are still seeing Coffin Flies at night so definitely carry a few of those just in case they hit the water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 9, 2018

We had a few clouds come through and tease us yesterday but we dealt with sun most of the day.  The bright sun seemed to push the hatches to later in the day.  Once the sun started to drop we had some more surface activity.  Nymphing or swinging wets would be a good bet during the mid day sun, especially with all the caddis around.  You may find some fish slashing caddis in the riffles so keep a dry fly handy too.  The big bugs are still around so carry your March Browns, Gray Fox, Cahill, and Isonychia patterns.  Sulphurs and olives are around in the evening too.  Some sections are seeing Coffin Flies while others are still seeing March Brown Spinners in the air. They should hit the water soon.  Wunderground’s forecast shows today as mostly cloudy and 73 degrees.  Wind shouldn’t be a problem at 5 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 8, 2018

Yesterday the hatches seemed to come in flushes.  When the mayflies were on the water the fish were happy and eating on top.  There was a little of everything out there:  March Browns, Gray Fox, Cahills, Green Drakes. Pink Ladys, Olives, a few Sulphurs, and Caddis.  No one mayfly was really heavy for us but they were all out.   We had some afternoon sunshine come out a little earlier than expected making the caddis happy.  Some riffles had fish sporadically eating them in the bright sun.  The warmer weather kept the fishing going into dark.  Depending on where you fish dark could mean Coffin Flies, March Brown and Gray Fox Spinners, or caddis.  If you covered them enough they would eat.  Today should be a little warmer with light winds from the North.  Sunshine most of the day.  Nymphing or swinging wets should be good until you see some action on top.  Watch the broken wavy water carefully for caddis eats.  The weekend forecast is now clear.  Water levels are good for wading and floating.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 7, 2018

Overall yesterday was a good day on the river.  We had decent clouds, cool weather, and no rain.  There were enough March Browns, Gray Fox, Cahills, and Caddis to get some fish looking up during the day.   Blind casting march Browns is still paying off.  There were olives on the water in the  afternoon but the fish were happy with cahills and caddis.  Some rivers had decent Coffin Fly spinner falls at dark while others seemed to shut down early.  Today will be warmer with a little more sun.  That should bring the caddis out earlier offering some opportunities.  Nymphing and swinging wets should work well today as the insects get active before they hatch.  The cool weather has kept the rivers in great shape.  We have decent water levels all through the system.

Just like we figured Wunderground has downgraded the rain forecast for the weekend.  It now looks like we’ll have great weather with only .08″ of rain Saturday night.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 6, 2018

The cool air temps and cloud cover over the last few days have really helped keep the water temps in check.  Callicoon only peaked at 62 degrees yesterday.  The whole system is in great shape for wading and floating.  We’re keeping the clouds and cool air again today.  Right now we’re fishing all of the big bugs with March Browns, Gray Fox, Isonychias, and Green Drakes out there.  Don’t overlook he smaller offerings since a lot of fish are eating the caddis, olives, and sulphurs too.  Right now you can blind cast big bugs and find fish and find fish keyed in on smaller flies who ignore everything else.  It’s a fun time to be on the river.  There are definitely Coffin flies out there at night.  The spinner fall is hard to predict but don’t leave the river early and have some stout tippet just in case.  The weekend is looking great.  We may have some rain but they keep downgrading the amount in the forecast.  The way the forecast is trending in the end we’ll probably have showers and good cloud cover – and good fishing

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 5, 2018

Yesterday ended up being a good day overall.  The cloud cover was great and we had a brief light shower mid day.  There were caddis, March Browns, and Sulphurs on the water.  The fish were happy in the cloud cover and a lot of fish were landed on top during the day.  Some river sections had Coffin Flies at night.  Today we should keep some cloud cover and have another very light, brief shower.  We’re still in a cool down period so the air temperature will stay in the 60’s.  The cooler temps and cloud cover have done a world of good for the lower East Branch, lower Beaverkill, and lower Mainstem.  Daytime temps will climb a little over the next few days but the nighttime temps will stay in the 50’s.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 4, 2018

Yesterday was definitely cooler with a bit more early rain than forecasted.  The wind was up and down all day but it was pleasant when it settled down.  The weather seamed to help the fishing.  Nymphing was productive with all sorts and sizes of nymphs.  There are so many different species hatching right now it’s a great time to play with new patterns.  Some people are catching fish blind casting March Browns and Isonychias.  We are seeing all of the big bugs right now including Green Drakes.  Sulphurs, Cahills, olives, and lots of different caddis are rounding out the mix.  Today looks like a great day to be on the water.  We’ll have clouds with a few mid afternoon showers.  The wind will be lower than yesterday staying around 5 – 7 mph for most of the day.  The rain soaked into the ground and the river flows are pretty much the same as yesterday morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 3, 2018

Yesterday saw decent cloud cover with the bugs coming later in the afternoon.  Some reports had fish working early while others saw the rising begin late.  There are definitely Green Drakes out there now along with the March Browns, Gray Fox, Sulphurs, and Olives. We saw a lot of spent and crippled caddis on the water last night too.  Despite all of the food floating down the river nymphing or wet fly fishing was still your best bets during the day.  Today’s forecast seems to be changing every time we look.  The latest has us cooler with the air temp staying in the low 60’s and light rain totaling less than 1/4″.  Mondays precipitation has also been downgraded to light rain.  The next week looks good with some light rain and cloud cover sticking around.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 2, 2018

The rain held off until yesterday evening.  We had some heavy rain for a while but we are clear out front.  The West Branch flow increased slightly but part of that was an increase in release.  The Cannonsville release is now 460 cfs.  The runoff is subsiding and we’re slowly dropping back already.  The Beaverkill and lower East Branch flows jumped dramatically but are falling just as dramatically.  The flow at Cooks Falls hit 925 cfs last night but has already dropped back to 527 cfs this morning.  Nymphing was the most productive method yesterday but there were fish eating on top.  Tan caddis worked well and the March Brown hatch seems to be growing.  There are still some #16 Hendricksons around the West Branch but we see fewer and fewer each day.  Sulphur and Cahill  hatches are also picking up in the evening.  We’ve spotted a Green Drake here and there but nothing great yet.  Today will be cooler with cloud cover.  We shouldn’t see any rain today but bring your raincoat in case of a stray shower or thunderstorm.
