Delaware River Report / Conditions June 18, 2019

There’s rain falling this morning and a chance of heavier patches as the day progresses. The forecast is for 3/10″ and it should taper off in the afternoon. We’ll update the blog if we get more than the weatherman calls for. Yesterday we had a mix of clouds and sun. Nymphing was the best option with some dry fly action later in the day. Today might be a good day to use streamers in the morning, then switching tactics as the rain moves out.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 17, 2019

The West Branch flow is already dropping after yesterday’s rain.  It is clear enough to fish with just a tinge of color down here.  The rain lasted most of the day but the feeders stayed clear until late afternoon.  Once the rain stopped we began to drop and clear immediately so we came through that one just fine.  Nymphing worked well early and then many people switched to streamers to finish out the day.  There is no rain in the forecast today so we should continue to drop.  The West Branch is already at a decent level for wading at 1,000 cfs .  The air temp will hit 80 today with 5 – 10 mph wind from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 16, 2019

We have light rain falling now that should continue for most of the day.  It should stay light though without any really heavy downpours.  The wind should be 3  – 4 mph from the South with  the air temp reaching the high 60’s.  Hopefully the breeze is enough to blow the fog off the water.  Good fishing weather.  If the rain works out like Thursday we should see the hatching begin earlier.  Sulphurs, green drakes, cahills, olives, the last of the march browns / gray fox (spinners), plus the isonychias.  Today has great potential if the rain stays in check.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 15, 2019

There were some bugs hatching mid day yesterday but the wind made casting difficult.  We definitely had gusts to 30 out there.  Things got better around 7 pm when the wind dropped and the caddis came out of the bushes.  Today looks much better with winds only around 10  mph, some sun, and and the air temp reaching the high 70’s.  We may see some gusts to 15 but it looks like the wind drops back down towards evening.  Besides the caddis we are seeing good numbers of green drakes, sulphurs, cahills, and the beginning of the isonychia hatch.  The last of the march browns and gray fox are still around too so have those spinners ready.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 14, 2019

The rain let up by early afternoon leaving us with cloud cover and awesome conditions.  Green d drakes, sulphurs, olives, and cahills were all hatching by mid afternoon.  There were also a few march browns, gray fox and isonychias out there for good measure.  There were a lot of bugs.  In some spots it took the fish a while to switch to eating on top but that was probably due to the number of bugs in the water column.  That made nymphing and swinging wets effective too.  Today we’ll have more sun with the air temp reaching 70 degrees.  Wind will be 10 – 20 from the North so try to find an area that’s protected.  Hopefully they have that part wrong.  River levels are good and water temps have fallen a bit over the last few days.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 13, 2019

We woke up to some light rain this morning but sop far the river flows are still dropping.  Overall we may see 1/2″ fall but it looks like it will be spread throughout the day.  The cloud cover should help make the fish more comfortable to rise and hopefully push the olives to hatch.  Wind will be 10 mph from the South and the air temp should hit 60 degrees.  Yesterday was a mix of sun and clouds.  People found fish rising but nymphing and swinging wets were definitely the way to go midday.  The runoff and cooler temps have helped dropped the river temps on the System even keeping the Main at Callicoon at 66  degrees yesterday.

If we see any dramatic changes in river flows we’ll post a mid day update.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 12, 2019

The wind was a killer yesterday.  While a few protected areas had some fish sporadically eating on top it was really a nymphing / wet fly day until dark.  Even the caddis stayed in the bushes until dark.  The river flows are quickly dropping back to normal levels.  Even the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls is wadeable this morning at 761 cfs.  The weather looks better too with 71 degrees, wind 10 mph from the South, and partly cloudy skies.  There are still some march browns and gray fox around – plus people are running into coffin flies at night.  The green drakes may be hatching at night but every day is different so definitely have a few on you.  Cahiils, sulphurs, and caddis should also be on the water today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 11, 2019

It rained most of yesterday afternoon.  It wasn’t particularly heavy, just a steady rain for hours.  The West Branch looks fine out front this morning.  It’s flowing a little higher than yesterday morning but is clear right now.  The flow increased at Hale Eddy a few hundred cfs and is at 892 cfs this morning.  It looks like it is about the peak on the graph.  Not too bad and should stay fine to fish today.  The Beaverkill and lower East Branch flows jumped quite a bit and neither of them are at a good level for wading this morning.  The flows should drop quickly over there so check the usgs gauges again this afternoon for the latest info.  The East Branch at Harvard is 682 cfs and still climbing right now.  The rain should be finished and we may even see a bit of sunshine this afternoon.  The air temp will be in the high 60’s.  The wind will pick up as the weather changes and then drop towards dark.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 10, 2019

Yesterday was a little cooler than Saturday but we had the same bright sunshine for most of the day.  Nymphing and swinging wets worked best during the day with some dry fly action at dark.  The better hatching during the day will be in the areas with cooler water temperatures.  We already have some clouds this morning and that should increase as we get towards noon.  Some rain showers start then but we should see only around 1/4″ of rain during the day.  It looks like a great day to be on the water.  More rain is coming over night.  We should see between 1/2″ and 3/4″ fall.  Some of the rivers need the water so right now this is a positive.  We’ve been dry for a week so a lot of it should soak into the ground.  Olives, cahills, sulphurs, and caddis should be out there today.  We are seeing green drakes on some sections plus a few coffin flies.  The colder river sections will still have some march browns and gray fox.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy and the Mainstem at Callicoon both peaked at 70 degrees or above yesterday.  The Mainstem at Lordville and the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls both peaked over 68 degrees yesterday.  It’s time to give fish in those areas a break and fish the colder river sections instead.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 9, 2019

Yesterday was a tough day.  There were some fish feeding on top very sporadically mid afternoon but the bright sun and low clear water pushed off most of the hatching to right at dark.  It felt like mid July out there at times.  Nymphing and swinging wets were definitely the best methods during the day.  Once the sun dropped we had the same hatching we’ve seen over the last week or so.  Caddis everywhere, sulhurs, cahills, and a few march brown / gray fox.  We’re looking at bright sun again today with a the air temp being a little cooler around 74 degrees.  Concentrate on nymphing and swinging the deeper runs and riffles early.  If you want to look for risers find the pools that get early afternoon shade and be patient.  The main hatching will likely be when the sun drops below the hills again.  We have some rain moving in tomorrow.  The day looks fine with most of the rain coming overnight.

The Mainstem at Callicoon and the East Branch at Fishs Eddy both peaked at or above 70 degrees yesterday.  Avoid fishing those river sections.  The Mainstem at Lordville and the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls both peaked at 68 degrees.  If your fishing the Main stay above those areas and check the temps with your thermometer before you fish.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 8, 2019

Yesterday was a bright sunny day with few clouds.  There were some fish caught on dries mid day but nymphing and swinging wets were your best bets until the sun dropped a bit in the afternoon.  The dry fly fishing picked up in the late afternoon with a good mix of caddis, sulphurs, and cahills.  There are still march browns and gray fox out there and a couple of green drakes being spotted here and there.

We have a couple of days of warm temps and sun ahead of us until we see some rain move in Monday.  Look for sections of river that get shade earlier in the day or riffles where caddis may be active to find some mid day surface activity.

Check water temps if you are fishing the lower Mainstem.  Callicoon peaked around 69 degrees yesterday and will likely go higher today with the bright sun and hot air temp.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 7, 2019

Yesterday was a mix of periods that fished well and some dead time.  The odd part is some of the best fishing was mid morning.  Possibly the sun breaking through at times slowed things down.  By evening things settled down and the bugs came as the sun dropped.  Overall is was a good day with a lot of decent fish landed.  We are seeing a lot of bugs on the water with caddis, cahills, sulphurs, and gray fox making up the most food.  A few green drakes have been spotted but so far we haven’t seen fishable numbers of those- they can’t be too far off.  Today we should see the air temp in the high 70’s, a partly cloudy sky, and wind 5- 10 from the North.  A comfortable day to be on the water.  Wading levels are still great with decent enough flows for floating.
