Delaware River Report / Conditions September 18, 2018

It looks like a lot of the rain split East and West of us.  It was mostly a steady light rain from 6 pm on.  The rivers are up this morning but no where near the levels people were predicting.  The flow at hale Eddy is 2,590 and climbing this morning but should level off and begin to drop by this afternoon.  We may see a brief shower or two this morning but that should be over before lunch.  The drop in air temperature is certainly welcome and we should peak around 75 degrees today.  The night time temps should be in the 50’s for most of the week.   The cooler air temps should help drop the water temps.  Hopefully that pushes the fall bugs and the hatches of olives, hebes, and smaller isonychias should get better towards the weekend.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 17, 2018

Yesterday was another day of bright sun and heat.  We saw a few one timers and found a few other fish here and there but mostly after the sun dropped behind the hills.  It really felt like mid summer conditions out there.  Luckily it looks like the heat has broken and we should be much cooler for the rest of the week.  We should start today off with some cloud cover that increases towards the afternoon. Wunderground has some rain starting around 3 pm.  It should start off as scattered showers and then turn into steadier rain overnight.  The forecast changes every time we look but right now the total amount of rain being called for has dropped.  We may see around 1″ overnight and less than 1/4″ tomorrow.  That’s much better than  what they were calling for a couple of days ago.  Little blue wing olives made up most of the bugs we saw last night but there were some isonychias and hebes out there.  We are also beginning to see more caddis in the evenings which is definitely a sign of fall.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 16, 2018

Yesterday seemed like a tough day on the water with a combination of high water and bright sun.  Nymphing the slow edges and swinging wets in the tailouts was probably the most successful methods.  Some people found fish rising to small olives and a couple of isonychias but most of the reports sounded like sporadic activity.  The West Branch has dropped a bit but has color coming out of the dam.  It is clear enough for fish to eat.  Today will  be similar to yesterday with sunshine and the air temp hitting 80 degrees.  The forecast is changing every few hours but we’re definitely getting some rain tomorrow and Tuesday.  The latest is showing 1.5″ over the course of the two days.  The air temps should drop quite a bit this week and that should help drop the water temps a bit and hopefully push the fall fishing.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 15, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,499 cfs.  The flows are the rest of the system are dropping slowly.  The West Branch still has some color coming in from the feeder streams but it is clear enough for fish to rise.  Starting off with streamers or blind casting an isonychia with a dropper would be good bets until you see a fish rise.  There are quite a few small olives hatching but you need to find slow water that the fish can set up in to find risers.  Today is going to be warmer with some sunshine but we shouldn’t see any rain.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 14, 2018

We had a bit of rain overnight that caused a bump in flows over most of the system.  The flow at Stilesville is still steady at 1,110 cfs.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 1,740 and dropping.  According to Wunderground we should have clouds today but no more rain until Monday.  The rivers should drop back over the next couple of days offering better wade opportunities in the longer, slow pools.  We mostly saw small olives last night mixed with a couple of isonychias.  If you’re looking for dry fly action concentrate on the long slow flats where the fish can set up and eat them.  There is some color in the West Branch still so streamers will be a good bet as the flows drop.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 13, 2018

We had some light rain yesterday but not enough to bring up the river flows- they are still dropping this morning.  We have some color in the West Branch but it is clear enough for the fish to eat.   Streamers seemed to be the best bet yesterday.  There were small olives hatching and some fish were eating off the surface sporadically. Look for slow tailouts or long slow edges where the fish can set up.  The dry fly action should get more consistent as the water drops over the next couple of days.  There are some scattered thunderstorms in the area today but the forecasted rain total is only .03″.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 12, 2018

The river flows have dropped quite a bit since yesterday.  The West Branch is flowing 1,770 at Hale Eddy and is fishable.  There is some color in the water but it is clear enough for the fish to eat on top.  Isonychias, olives, and cahills should cover any dry fly action.  Streamer fishing may be good when there isn’t direct sun on the water.  There are some scattered storms in the area today.  It looks like the best chance of precipitation happens overnight.  Scattered usually means they miss us here so hopefully that trend will continue.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 11, 2018

The rivers are high and off color this morning but the flows are dropping quickly.  The rain was steady all day but we never had a real heavy downpour. The West will be back in good shape in a day or two.  If you get above the feeders on the West Branch Stilesville should offer some clear water at 1,100 cfs.  Stay above Oquaga Creek up there.   The flow at Hale Eddy peaked around 3,400 cfs last night and has already dropped back to 2,160 cfs this morning.  There is no real precipitation in the forecast today so the rivers should continue to drop and clear.

UPDATE September 10, 2018 – 4 PM

We’ve had steady rain most of the day.  All of the river flows are still climbing.  Stilesville is steady but the feeder streams are adding quite a bit of water bringing the flow to 2,830 cfs at Hale Eddy.  If it stops raining this afternoon we should peak and begin to drop tonight.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 10, 2018

It looks like the overnight rain didn’t add too much water to the river flows.  We have a steady rain coming down this morning.  The forecast is changing hourly and right now they are predicting 1″ of rain over the course of the day.  Hopefully the heavier stuff will slide west of us but this is a pretty large storm on the radar.  If the flows change dramatically we will do another update.

It took a while for the bugs to get going yesterday but by mid afternoon we were fishing a good olive hatch.  #20 – 24 olives were coming off in pretty good numbers on the lower West Branch and the fish were up and happy.  We didn’t hear much about isos or cahills yesterday but the once the olives hatched they more than made up for that.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 9, 2018

Everything seemed to come together yesterday and the fish were happy.  Most people were talking about the decent Isonychia hatches but there were olives mixed in too.  The fish were friendly and eating off the top.  Cloud cover, cool water temps, and no wind.  The rain stayed just south of us all day and we skated through dry.  It sounded like the best day on the river in a while.  We’re going to start off with a little sun this morning but the clouds should roll in by lunch time.  The  wind should be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  Wunderground is showing the rain starting well after dark tonight.  It looks like another great day to be on the water.  Tomorrow looks wet with over 1″ of rain in the forecast.  Hopefully the most of the storms skirt around us again.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 8, 2018

We had a few minutes of very light rain yesterday but the clouds stuck around all day.  The storms seemed spotty with some areas receiving a bit more.  The freestones and feeder streams are getting low so the tailwaters are settling into pretty steady flows from the releases.  The weather settled in and the cooler temps definitely feel better.  We should peak in the mid 60’s today, have winds out of the North 5 – 10 mph, and have a mostly cloudy sky.  Sounds like a good fishing day.  Olives, steno / cahills, and Isonychias should cover most of the hatching today.
