Delaware River Report / Conditions September 7, 2018

The early rain missed us yesterday.  The thunder sounded like it went just North.  We did start getting some rain late in the afternoon and another brief storm overnight.  The West Branch flow bumped slightly at Hale Eddy but is already back to normal.  The Beaverkill and East Branch flows also bumped slightly but should drop back today.  The forecast has been changing a lot over the last couple of days.  Today we should see cloud cover, an air temp peaking around 73 degrees, and wind around 5 mph from the North.  When the storms moved in yesterday the air temp dropped quickly and seemed to shut the bugs down.  It was still possible to drum some fish up on Isonychias and nymphs  / wets.  The olives should pick back up as this cooler weather trend settles in.

The tailwaters are in good shape but the Beaverkill peaked over 70 degrees at Cooks Falls yesterday.  It is starting off at 68 degrees this morning.  Skip that river and fish cold water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 6, 2018

We are finally seeing some cooler air temps again.  We’ll still be warm around 80 degrees today but it’s moving in the right direction.  There are some clouds this morning but more should be moving in through the afternoon.  Scattered thunderstorms so bring a raincoat just in case they hit us.  The amount of precipitation should be negligible around 1/10″.  Olives #18 -20, Stenos / Cahills #14, and Isonychias # 12 -14 should cover most of what you see.  Carry a few flying ants, sulphurs, and olive sulphurs just in case.  It looks like the clouds and rain will stick around through the weekend.  Hopefully that will keep the olives on the water longer offering the fish a better chance to eat them.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 5, 2018

We had a good number of olives hatching yesterday but they were getting off the water quickly in the sun.  We did find fish eating the small olives in long flat pools.  They were still willing to eat an iso.  The West Branch is low enough to nymph or swing wets in some areas.  Otherwise concentrate on shaded areas until the sun drops below the hills.  There are still a few left over sulphurs hatching on the upper West so that’s not a bad place to start.  Today will look a lot like yesterday with sun and an air temp in the mid 80’s.  The rain that was forecasted for today looks like it is now coming tomorrow evening.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 4, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped slightly to 1,145 cfs this morning.  We should see air temps climb back into the 80’s today with a few clouds but mostly sun.  Olives, isonychias, cahills, and heptagenias should cover most of your dry fly action.  If the humidity is high you may see some flying ants.  Blind casting isonychias in the riffles has produced some fish.  If you find a shallow riffle try swinging iso wets through it.  We are catching some fish on the swing when they are looking for emergers.  The heat will stick around for a couple of days but the temp should drop for the weekend.  The tailwaters are in good shape but the Beaverkill peaked over 70 degrees at Cooks Falls yesterday.  It is starting off at 68 degrees this morning.  Skip that river and fish cold water.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 3, 2018

Yesterday was another cloudy day with nor rain.  The sun broke through a few times but not for long.  Once again people saw mostly olives with a few isonychias and cahills in the mix.  Patience has paid off in the high water.  Waiting for a fish to rise on a good seam or bank has been the way to go.  You can target the one timers with isos but if you’re looking for steady fish go slow and watch the soft water.  There is some rain in today’s forecast but it should be less than 1/10th of an inch.  That should give us good cloud cover in the afternoon.  The release from Cannonsville has been tepped down slightly again to 1,237 cfs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 2, 2018

The release from Cannonsville was dropped slightly again and is 1,315 cfs this morning.  We had clouds most of yesterday and it looked like it should have been a great olive day.  There were a few bugs out but not as many as we expected.  Blind casting isonychias and cahills seemed to be the most effective method.  When people did find steady rising fish small olives were the answer.  We’re going to be a little warmer today with the air temp hitting the high 70’s.  We have clouds and a 30% chance of light rain. It looks like a good olive day- hopefully they hatch in good numbers and stay on the water.  Have a couple flying ants with you today too.  As it warms up this afternoon the humidity may trigger them.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 1, 2018

The release from Cannonsville has been dropped slightly to 1,407 cfs.  We did have a little rain overnight so some of the flows bumped slightly but it won’t really be noticeable on the river.  We had good cloud cover yesterday with some scattered showers around the area.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills were still our go to flies.  We found rising fish plus fish that were willing to eat isos and cahills blind casted in the riffles and seams.

Today looks like another good fishing day.  Clouds, winds around 7 mph from the south, and a high of 73 degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 31, 2018

It’s the last day of August and the West Branch at the 191 Bridge is 51 degrees this morning.  The air temp dropped and we should peak around 70 degrees today.  Winds will gust around 10 mph from the South and we should see some evening rain totaling 1/10″.  We have decent cloud cover all ready this morning.  We’ve seen good olives over the last days and today certainly looks good for them.  Isonychias have worked well both on rising fish and blind casting.  There are a lot of different Stenocrons out there that can be imitated well with a #14 light cahill pattern.  We’ve come across a lot of fish eating emergers so swinging wets could work really well right now too.  The rest of the weekend looks like a mix of clouds and sun.  Most of the water temps look great throughout the system but the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls peaked at 72 degrees yesterday.  Stick to the other rivers for a while until that one cools down.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 30, 2018

Yesterday was another hot, sunny day.  There were the normal olives with a few isonychias and stenos hatching but it took the fish a while to get happy.  Once the sun dropped behind the hills the fish were a bit more cooperative.  Today looks like a much better fishing day.  We should be 10 degrees cooler with cloud cover and a slight chance of rain.  If we do see rain through the weekend the amounts in the forecast look negligible.  There are spots on the West Branch that you can wade at this level.  The heat wave has broke for the time being and it should be a good weekend with clouds and some showers.

Do not fish the lower Beaverkill.  It’s been peaking over 70 degrees at Cooks Falls for the last few days and is starting off at 68 degrees this morning.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 29, 2018

The sun stuck around a lot longer than we would have liked.  We had some clouds move in for brief periods in the afternoon but for the most part we dealt with bright sun and heat.  There were decent olives mixed with some flying ants on the water even in the sunshine.  The isonychias seemed to wait until the sun dropped behind the hills.  We found a few fish early but most of the action we saw was in the last hour and a half of light.  Today looks like the last of the hot summer conditions for a while.  We’re looking at 88 degrees and sunshine today until a front comes through and drops tomorrow’s high back into the 70’s.  We may get the odd thunderstorm today.  Hopefully some clouds will move in early this afternoon.  The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls hit 70 degrees yesterday so stick higher on that system or the tailwaters for decent temps.  The rest of the week looks like much better fishing weather.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 28, 2018

There is still some runoff coming down the feeder streams but the West Branch has leveled off for the most part.  The release is 1,500 cfs and Hale Eddy is 1,730 this morning.  These are great levels for floating but there are some areas you can wade.  Olives and isonychias mad up most of the bugs we saw last night but there were flying ants, a few sulphurs, and cahills hatching too.  The higher release have kept the rivers cold.  The clouds stuck around most of the afternoon and the river fished very well for August.  We’re still in the heat wave but the weather should break on Thursday.  If you plan on fishing the Beaverkill check the water temps first today.  It hit 68 degrees yesterday and may climb higher in today’s sunshine.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 27, 2018

Yesterday was another day of sun and with a few clouds.  Streamer fishing picked up when the sun wasn’t on the water.  People found fish rising to isonychias, olives, and some flying ants.  The release from Cannonsville is 1,500 cfs. It looks like we have stopped spilling so the river should level out.  The feeder streams are still pushing some water but they are leveling out too.  Water temperatures look great throughout the system so there are lots of options.  People are wading the West Branch in spots and doing well.  There are some spots that you can wade at these levels.

We have a heat wave for the next few days but it should break on Thursday leading into a pleasant weekend.
