Delaware River Report / Conditions September 16, 2019

The flow at Stilesville is steady at 719 cfs this morning.  We have a 50% chance of some rain this morning  but the amount should be negligible.  We may have some fog moving in and out until the rain clears out.  We should see 70 degrees with wind 5 -10 from the North.  The sun will break through a little and mix with cloud cover in the afternoon.  This is a nice change after the sunshine yesterday.  Olive sulphurs, isos, caddis, and olives will cover most of what you’ll see.  Definitely have flying ants, cahills, white flies, and yellow sallies just in case.  The bugs came a little later yesterday due to the sunshine but overall it fished well we found some nice fish.

The release from Cannonsville has been decreased a bit to 678 cfs.  We had some rain yesterday morning and again overnight.  It wasn’t enough precipitation to change the flows much but it did bring in some fog on the river.  We saw good olive hatches yesterday mixed with some flying ants.  There are still some isonychias and yellow sallies out there too.  If you are fishing the Mainstem have your white flies ready for the evening.  We’re going to be a little warmer today with the air temp hitting 75 degrees.  Wind will not be a factor with a mix of sun and clouds.

The release from Cannonsville has been bumped slightly to 811 cfs this morning.  This is the perfect situation to increase the release from Pepacton by a couple hundred cfs and decrease Cannonsville.  Mainstem temperatures are not a problem so some kind of balance between the two reservoir releases would actually make sense.  Yesterday’s bump added some extra weeds coming down that took a while to filter out.  The 10 – 15 mph wind from the South was the main problem.  There were some wind breaks on bends and behind islands.  Today we’ll have the same wind but a really good chance of afternoon showers.  The precip total should be less than 1/4″ so we could be in for a really good olive day.  The West Branch has the fall tint to it so streamers are now a good option too.

People had a good day out there yesterday mostly with flying ants.  There were some olives, isos, cahills, and caddis but most people were talking about the ants.  Bigger fish showed and were happy on top mid afternoon.  The light rain and cloud cover definitely helped.  We’ll have a lot more sunshine today.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South and the air temp will reach 70 degrees.  The lower release cleared the river a little bit and it looks like there are fewer weeds making nymphing or even throwing streamers good options early.

It appears NYC DEP is going to continue their historical yo yo releases.   The release from Cannonsville was dropped yesterday and then increased again.  The flow at Stilesville is 761 cfs this morning.  This is likely due to the Montague flow target.  The releases from Lake Wallenpaupack should be low this week so the release from Cannonsville was increased.  There is a whitewater release tomorrow from the Mongaup River so they decided they could save a few drops of water by dropping our release for a few hours.

We should see on and off showers today with good cloud cover.  the air temp should peak at 71 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  We had a good storm roll through overnight but it seems like most of the rain soaked into the ground.  The release from Cannonsville has been dropped back to 753 cfs.  There are still a lot of small olives hatching mixed with a few isonychias, cahills, caddis, and yellow sallies.  There are white flies hatching on the Mainstem.  We are catching fish on flying ants but haven’t seen a massive fall yet.  They may just stay spotty so ants are a good bet right now if you find fish rising and don’t see much on the water.

For some people yesterday’s dry fly action was mid afternoon and then tapered off in the evening.  Good olives with some yellow sallies and caddis.  There were a few isonychias and cahills out too.  We’re in for one oddly warm day today hitting the low 80’s and then we drop back to more normal temps tomorrow.  We may see a little rain this morning but should be left with just clouds in the afternoon.  Total precip today looks negligible with 1/4″ coming tomorrow.  The release from Cannonsville dropped slightly to 896 cfs.  The West Branch is okay to wade in some spots but the best wading is on the Mainstem right now.

There was some dry fly action in the evening but early nymphing was the best bet in the sun.  There is some color in the West Branch with the higher release so streamers are working too.  Isonychas, lots of olives, a few caddis, a few cahills, and a few flying ants.  Today should be similar to yesterday with a high of 72 degrees, wind 5 – 10 from the South, and maybe a few more clouds. We’re going to warm up tomorrow with some rain and then drop right back into our normal late summer / early fall weather pattern.  Hopefully the rain and heat bring out good numbers of flying ants tomorrow.

The release from Cannonsville has been bumped up slightly again to 913 cfs.   This is likely due to water needed to meet the Montague flow target.  Wading is possible on some West Branch river sections and is fine on the Mainstem.  Today’s weather looks like a repeat of yesterday with sunshine and a high of 72 degrees.  Wind will be a non factor.  Nymphing and wet flies will probably be your best bet until the afternoon olive hatches.  Blind casting isonychias in the riffles may also be a good choice.  The morning tricos are still around but fish rising to them seems to still be spotty.  We’re still patiently waiting for a big flying ant fall but there are some around.

Well the release from Cannonsville has been increased again.  It is 831 cfs this morning.  The flow on the lower West Branch is still climbing as the higher release makes it down river but we should level out by the afternoon.  We’re starting off cool again this morning at 50 degrees but should reach 70 by the afternoon.  Clouds and wind 5 -10 mph from the North.  That’s much better than the wind we dealt with yesterday.  There were olives and a surprising number of yellow sallies out yesterday but the wind did not help at all.  Nymphing was a decent bet but a few people found success on top.

The Stilesville gauge looks off so the release is steady at 450 cfs bringing the flow at Hale Eddy to 575 cfs.  Good for floating and wading.  We’re starting off at 48 degrees this morning but should hit 70 by late afternoon.  The wind will be up a bit at 10 -15 from the North so adjust your plan accordingly.  Nymphing has worked well during the day although some people are finding fish eating olives even in the sunshine.  Most of the olives have been coming off in the late afternoon mixed with a few isos and cahills.  There are tricos out again this morning but on these cold mornings they sometimes fall later than you expect so watch the tail outs once the sun hits the water.

Well it looks like NYC DEP has had enough of ramping the flows up and down.  The release hit close to 1,200 cfs yesterday afternoon and was immediately dropped back to 450 cfs. The recording says 450 cfs release but the gauge at Stilesville shows a 387 cfs flow this morning.  The flow  on the lower West and Upper Main will continue to drop but everything is in good shape for wading already.  Of course the quick bump in release pushed the weeds but they should have settled out for the most part.  Fish were rising in the high water in the evening so they should be easier to reach today.  We’re looking at 70 degrees today with a mix of clouds and sunshine.  Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  It looks like a great weather weekend.  Olives, isonychias, and cahills are still on the menu.  Definitely have your ants and yellow sallys ready just in case they hit the water.

The release from Cannonsville has been increase to 801 cfs.  Probably a temperature bump because the Mainstem at Lordville hit 69 degrees yesterday.  Today will be cooler with the air temp only hitting 73 degrees.  We’ll have sunshine with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.  That’s actually better than yesterday when the wind mad fishing tough mid afternoon.  A few storms threatened us but the precipitation was non existent here – just the wind.  We’re still mostly fishing small olives, isonychias, and cahills.  Some caddis are around but we’ve also been finding a lot of yellow sally stoneflies.  Tricos have been spotty but they are still around.  If you don’t find fish on them by mid morning move around to different river sections.  They can also fall later than expected on cold mornings.
