Delaware River Report / Conditions May 6, 2011

A clear, cool night has brought the river temps down a bit, but the bright sun forecast today should get us back into the 50s early in the day. Both the main stem and West Branch were FULL of bugs yesterday, but unfortunately few risers. The flows have stabilized, so now that the fish are acclimated, we should be in good shape! That being said, here were yesterday’s results:

The river has bumped slightly, but fortunately no big jump in flow, or massive discoloration! Tons of bugs were around again yesterday in the cold rain, and the sun is shining today – bodes well for more hatching, and some heads popping up!

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 4, 2011

Yet another rain-pocalypse has come through, but we dodged quite a bullet! The West Branch has come up just about 2000 cfs, but is already heading down, with decent clarity. The sudden influx of water shouldn’t affect the hatches TOO much, however wading is yet again UNSAFE. Not to put another ‘you should have been here yesterday’ post up, but you should have been here yesterday. TONS of bugs, many fish finally starting to rise, and several nice fish caught – I will post some pics a bit later today, so check back later!

The rivers are coming down, and our guys had some GREAT fishing yesterday on the West Branch and Main Stem – the water is dropping, and the bugs are popping. Let’s hope that the rain in the forecast doesn’t bring it up too much!

Bug Soup! Mid-afternoon yesterday saw fantastic hatches of Hendricksons, Paraleps, Baetis, and caddis – once the temperatures got up! Fish are moving on the bugs in the slower water where it can be found. Flows are still high, so wading is not a safe option yet – drift boats are the way to go!

The One Bug is in full swing here on the Delaware, so there is a flotilla of boats on the river, finding fish in the back eddies and slower pockets. With the flows gradually lowering, more and more fish will be coming to the surface to take the insects that are hatching with the warmer weather.

River Report / Conditions April 29, 2011

The rain subsided yesterday, and the West Branch crested near 12,000 CFS. That is a little bit high, needlss to say. Most of the discoloration has left, and we anticipate it starting to fish again once we drop a bit more throughout the day. However, The river is still unsafe this morning, especially for wading.  If the predicted  rain misses us we should see the rivers begin to drop to safe levels overnight.

Very heavy rain fell early this morning, with off and on showers predicted for the rest of the day.  Click on the links below for the latest flows and temps.  We expect the rivers to continue  to rise through out the morning.  Some of the feeder creeks are dumping muddy water into the system coloring up the rivers.  The river is unsafe this morning.  If the predicted  rain misses us we should see the rivers begin to drop to safe levels overnight.

More heavy rain last night, bringing the rivers up and adding a lot of color.  Looking at the graph, the West Branch has peaked and has begun to fall.  Hopefully any additional storms will miss us and we will drop back to fishable levels over the next couple of days. That being said, guide Steve Shen caught a nice brown yesterday on a white “secret” streamer:

River Report / Conditions April 26, 2011

We had some serious thunderstorms overnight (pink lightning – seriously), which dumped quite a bit of water over the West Branch, bringing us up dramatically. We are already seeing the river drop, and it will hopefully clear throughout the day today. The East Branch and Main Stem also rose, but appear to have avoided the brunt of the water. The warmer water temps are very welcome, however, and we should see both fish and insect activity pick up, even with the higher water.

Maybe spring will arrive sometime soon! Temperatures are warmer, but we are expecting yet more rain over the next few days. The rivers are back up a bit, but the increasing weather should help bring more bugs to the top, and hopefully a few risers as well!
