Delaware River Report: May 1, 2023
Take today off and regroup when the flows drop. We were hit with a lot of rain and all of the rivers are extremely high. Definitely unsafe for wading. The West Branch flow is already dropping. Generally the West Branch recovers to a fishable state in 24 hours. The flows will remain high for a while with reservoir spill. We’ll take a look at the flows again tomorrow morning. Here’s what is likely to happen over the next coupe of days. The West Branch flow will drop this morning but the flow will increase once the runoff above the reservoir increases the spill.
Yesterday fished well for the people who braved the weather. Streamers produced some decent fish and some people found fish on blue quills and hendricksons. It was a nice finish to April.
Today will be 53 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. We may see a few showers totaling .07″ of rainfall. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the South.

Keep an eye on the gauges for the latest flows. If anything changes drastically we’ll do a mid day blog update
We woke up to a light steady rain. Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are spilling. At 6:30 am the gauges are showing a slight bump in flows. That will probably increase as the day goes on. The clarity out front looks fine this morning, We should see 1/2″ of rain during the day with more coming overnight. If you’re wading keep an eye on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc gauges. Those are your best options this morning. It took a while to get going but overall yesterday fished well. The wind was unpleasant at times and people definitely got wet but the bugs hatched and the fish were happy. It was the best day of the season so far. Not from the standpoint of number of bugs hatching but just really good fishing.
We’ll see the air temp hit 59 degrees today with wind 10 – 20 out of the South. Hourly the wind looks okay early but picking up later in the day. Rainfall should be around .6″ during the day with more falling overnight.

We had some rain overnight but overall the river flows were not affected. There was a slight bump of a couple hundred cfs on the East Branch. Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are spilling. Floating is a much better option than wading today. The best wading opportunities will be on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. The wind was unkind yesterday but people still found rising fish. Hendricksons and blue quills made up most of the bugs. Some stretches have good apple caddis so swinging flies can work well. Nymphing worked wee on some stretches and streamers are always a good plan in higher water.
Today will be cooler hitting 50 degrees. We’ll see some showers but total rainfall during the day should be .15″ Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the South. Hopefully they have the wind wrong.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are spilling again. There are some areas on the tailwaters you can wade if you know the river and use caution. Floating is a better option. The best wading opportunities will be on the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. There were a lot of bugs on the water yesterday. Hendricksons, blue quills, and caddis made up the bulk of what we saw. Definitely have your spinner box handy from here forward.
Today will hit 56 degrees with wind 10 – 15 mph from the South. There may be an afternoon shower but total rainfall should be .02″ during the day. The 10 day forecast shows some rain everyday for the entire stretch. Click on the gauge links below for the latest flow updates.

The Cannonsville spill increased slightly to 234 cfs bringing the flow at Hale Eddy is 1,180 cfs. There are still spots to wade if you’re cautious. The Beaverkill flow dropped slightly so the overall affect will be minimal. We had some rain showers last night into this morning but the feeder streams look fine. The precip should be done for the day. Some river sections are seeing a mix of apple caddis and just a couple of March Browns joining the Hendricksons, blue quills, and olives. Other river sections seem to be more normal with blue quills, olives, and a few hendricksons. Water temps seem to be the driving force. Overall yesterday fished very well.
Today will be warmer hitting 60 degrees with sun. Wind will be light and variable.

Cannonsville is spilling 111 cfs so the West Branch flow is up slightly this morning. It is still a jumble of hatches on some river sections with apple caddis and just a couple of March Browns joining the Hendricksons, blue quills, and olives. It sounds like most people caught their fish on hendricksons and caddis. The fish were on the bugs and seemed happy. We’re in the 30’s this morning so like yesterday it will take a while for the water temps to climb.
Today will be 55 degrees with good cloud cover. We may see some showers in the afternoon but only 1/10″ today. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The river flows have dropped a bit and there are wade opportunities on the West Branch (some spots), the Upper East Branch, and the Beaverkill. Just use common sense. We have a jumble of hatches on some river sections with apple caddis and just a couple of March Browns joining the Hendricksons, blue quills, and olives. Yesterday fished well later in the afternoon with just about everyone finding some rising fish to target. Streamers worked well in the morning. We’re coming off a cool night so like yesterday it will take a while for the water temps to climb. It should fish similarly.
Today will be 53 degrees with some sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. There is a very slight chance of a shower but the rainfall amount should be negligible. It sounds exactly like yesterday.

The runoff is subsiding and the main river flows are dropping. The West Branch looks good this morning and is wadeable in spots. Stilesville was unaffected by the rain and is 694 cfs. The Beaverkill and East Branch are both running high with some color. The Beaverkill is 1,290 cfs at Cooks Falls so that should be in decent shape by tomorrow. Yesterday was mostly streamers and nymphs in the higher flows.
Today will be 53 degrees with some sun. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. There is a very slight chance of a shower but the rainfall amount should be negligible. The night air temps have dropped back in to the high 30’s so it will take a little longer for the water temps to climb.

We were hit with some stronger storms than predicted and the river flows are up quite a lot this morning. The West Branch is okay with some color and running 1,260 cfs at Hale Eddy. The flow at Stilesville is 694 cfs so there are still some wade opportunities. Oquaga Creek has peaked and is already dropping so we should see the West drop today if we don’t get additional rain. The storms that hit Roscoe last night were pretty violent. The Beaverkill at Cooks Falls is flowing 1,140 cfs. The wind made yesterday really, really tough. It was mostly a nymph day but some people saw a few rising fish (not super steady because of the wind). It was a tough one.
Today will be cooler hitting 57 degrees. We may see a little additional rain. Hopefully Wunderground is correct and it’s only .05″. Wind will be much better at 5 – 10 mph from the North.

We’re starting off with warmer water and good cloud cover this morning. The sunshine stuck around a little longer than we wanted yesterday but we did get some cloud cover in the afternoon. Plus some wind gusts… The wind made it really tough. Hendricksons, blue quills, little black caddis, and stoneflies will make up the majority of bugs.
Today will hit 72 degrees with good cloud cover. We may see a stray shower but Wunderground is calling the daytime rainfall total at .01″. Wind will be 15 – 25 from the South so do your best to find some protected areas, Most of the rain should fall overnight. Totals may be close to an inch in some areas. We’ve been really dry and the trees are leafing out so a lot of it will soak into the ground.

The river flows dropped slightly with the runoff subsiding but everything looks good this morning. The water temps are starting off warmer this morning than yesterday. That should help push the bugs. All the rivers are still in good shape for wading and floating. Nymphing before the hatches has put some fish in the net. By mid afternoon we’re seeing bugs on the water. Hendricksons, blue quills, little black caddis, and stoneflies will make up the majority of bugs. The timing of the hatches have fluctuated based on bright sun, water temps, etc.
Today it will feel like we’re back in Summer again. 78 degrees with sunshine this morning. We should see some clouds roll in during the afternoon with a possible thunderstorm. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South
