Delaware River Report: July 13, 2022
We had some thunderstorms pass through in the evening that brought some rain. The West Branch flows did not budge and the river looks fine this morning. The Beaverkill and East Branch flows are up a bit. So everything should fish the same with no real change. Afternoon sulphurs on the coldest river sections with some cahills and Isonychias. The lower West should fish with nymphs and wets early with sulphurs, cahills, and a few isonychias coming in the evening. Caddis are still around so have a few patterns with you. On the lower West we’re seeing most of them in the morning. Today will be cooler hitting 82 degrees. We’ll start off with sun but see some clouds move in during the afternoon. there is another chance of thunderstorms. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

There was a another quick pulse release from Cannonsville overnight. This again was timed for extra cold water to hit the Mainstem to keep it below 75 degrees at Lordville. The West Branch flow is already dropping back to normal. We have some suns poking through the clouds this morning but we should cloud up and actually get some rain this afternoon. Total rainfall should be ,14″ which will soak right into the ground. There is a chance of thunderstorms so keep an eye on the radar. The mid to lower WB should dry fly fish in the evening as the sun drops. Small sulphurs and small olives are making up the bulk of the hatches. There are some cahills, Isonychias, and a few caddis on the water too.

There was a quick pulse release from Cannonsville overnight. This was timed for extra cold water to hit the Mainstem to keep it below 75 degrees at Lordville. The extra release last a couple of hours and the flow is already dropping back to normal. It won’t really be noticeable and shouldn’t affect the fishing at all. Today will have “Plenty of Sunshine” and hit 85 degrees according to Wunderground. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South. So normal conditions when the best daytime activity will be on the river sections with the coldest water. The mid to lower WB should dry fly fish in the evening as the sun drops. Delaware River Report: July 10, 2022
Today will be another day of sunshine, a high near 80 degrees, and light wind. The water levels are about the same as yesterday and the fishing should also be the same. The colder water sections will have small sulphurs earlier in the day with a mix of Isonychias, a few small olives, and a few Isonychias. The lower river sections will have similar hatching towards dark. Look for areas that get shade earlier in the day. In between hatching swinging wets and nymphing have brought some fish to the net. Typical Summer fishing.

Wunderground is calling for sun early with a few clouds in the afternoon. That sounds like sunny. So the better daytime activity should be on the upper river sections with the coldest water. Small sulphurs, a few cahills, small olives, and Isonychias should cover you. There have been some tan #18 caddis around in the morning. The dry fly action on the other river sections should pick up in the late afternoon / evening as the sun drops. Same bugs as up top. Otherwise nymphing or swining wets in the riffles will be your best bet. It’s also that time of year to blind cast Isonychia or Light Cahill patterns in broken water. We’ll hit 79 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

For daytime dry fly activity look for sulphurs in the coldest river sections with some cahills and Isonychias. Mainly sulphurs. There are a few caddis around in the morning along with some left over spinners in the bigger pools. The lower river sections had some small sulphurs hatching a little earlier than we expected. A few cahills, and small olives were mixed in but it was mainly about the sulphurs down here too. We have cloud cover this morning but that should burn off and turn to sunshine. It’ll hit 82 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The clouds stuck around longer than expected yesterday. The sun finally popped out in the afternoon but not as much as Wunderground projected. The cloud cover was good for fishing and made being on the water all day a little easier. There aremid afternoon sulphurs in the coldest river sections with some cahills and Isonychias. Caddis are around in the morning along with some left over spinners in the bigger pools. Once the sun drops the lower river sections are seeing some sulphurs, cahills, and small olives. Today should be similar to yesterday except we shouldn’t have any wind. The clouds will burn off in the afternoon and the air temp will hit 80 degrees.

So far all of the storms have gone around us so the rivers are starting off at pretty much the same flows as yesterday. The water temps did drop a couple of degrees overnight. We have decent cloud cover this morning but we should see some sun in the afternoon. The air temp will hit 78 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North. We’re seeing some mid afternoon sulphurs in the coldest river sections with some cahills and Isonychias mixed in. A few people are finding some fish on caddis early. The other river sections are seeing the best hatching towards evening.

Today looks like a good fishing day with some rain coming through this morning totaling .25″. We already have good cloud cover. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the south. That’s not ideal but much better than 85 and blazing sunshine. So look for places that will block the wind and it should be fine. Hopefully the rain pushes the olives and sulphurs to hatch a little earlier in the day. Some sections may see fog but the wind should actually help clear that. No real change in hatches so sulphurs, cahills, and olives. Plus some Isonychias.

There was another overnight 100 cfs pulse from Cannonsville to keep the temp at Lordville under 75 degrees. The flow at Stilesville is almost back to 500 cfs and Hale Eddy is dropping. It shouldn’t be noticeable on the West Branch by the time most people start fishing today. Today will be a lot like yesterday but with less wind. The air temp will hit 81 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. The best bet for daytime dry fly activity remains on the coldest sections of the rivers. We have bee seeing some Sulphurs mixed with caddis hatching by lunchtime. The lower sections will be nymphing / wet flies early with the best shot of dry fly action in the evening as the sun drops. No real change in hatches so sulphurs, cahills, and olives. Plus some Isonychias.

Most of the heavy storms slid south of us last night and the flows are starting close to yesterday’s. There is some light rain falling but not enough to change anything. Total rainfall for the day should be .06″. Hopefully that pushes the hatches a little earlier in the day. Yesterday fished similar to the other days this week with some daytime dry fly activity on the coldest sections of river and evening activity on the lower sections. Sulphurs and cahills are making up the bulk of the flies but there are Isonychias, olives, and a few caddis out there too.
