Delaware River Report: August 15, 2022

The release from Cannonsville was increased bringing the Stilesville flow to 919 cfs. It looks level on the graph. That is still an okay level to wade in spots – just use caution in faster water. There may be some vegetation floating by early from the increase but that should flush through relatively quickly. Small sulphurs, small olives, and cahills are still the main hatches. It’s still normal fishing with the best daytime hatching up near the dam in the coldest water. The lower West is still fishing best early and late in the day. Today will be 80 degrees and sunny. There is a slight chance of an brief afternoon shower. Wind will be light and variable.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

Thank you to everyone who participated in yesterday’s Get Trashed river cleanup. It was a huge success. We can’t wait for next year’s event!

The release from Cannonsville is steady at 650 cfs for the third day in a row. It’s a great level for floating and wading. Small sulphurs, olives, and cahills are still the main hatches. The olives are small but the fish have been on them. It’s still normal fishing with the best daytime hatching up near the dam in the coldest water. The lower West has been best early and late in the day. Today will be 82 degrees and sunny. We may see a few clouds in the afternoon but mostly count on sunshine. Wind will be light and variable.

Today is the 6th Annual Get Trashed in the Catskills River Cleanup. If you’re in the area and want to participate let us know. The cleanup kicks off around 10 am here at the flyshop. We had a great turnout at last night’s Iron Fly to kick off the weekend.

The release from Cannonsville is steady at 650 cfs for the second day in a row. The little extra water is nice and is still great for both floating and wading. Small sulphurs, olives, and cahills are still making up the bulk of the bugs on the upper river sections. We’re coming off another 50 degree night so it’s a comfortable morning and the water temps have dropped a bit. Today will be sunny and 76 degrees. The wind will be a bit less than yesterday at 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

Tomorrow is the 6th Annual Get Trashed in the Catskills River Cleanup. If you’re in the area and want to participate let us know. The cleanup kicks off around 10 am here at the flyshop.

The release from Cannonsville was bumped slightly and the flow at Stilesville is level at 627 cfs this morning. Small sulphurs, olives, and cahills are still making up the bulk of the bugs on the upper river sections. The bugs are there and the fish are on them. At times they can be picky so use more flush floating flies and spinners. The wind was tough at times yesterday afternoon but settled down in the evening. We’re coming off a 50 degree night so it’s a comfortable morning. We’ll be cooler today hitting 76 degrees with abundant sunshine. Wind will be 10 – 15 from the North.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

We got another slightly larger pulse from Cannonsville last night but the flow levels have already dropped back. The hatches have been best in the cold water near the dam mid-day with small sulphurs and cahills. Or wait until the sun drops a little lower on the West Branch and bring your olives. There are a few caddis around so that might be worth a shot on picky fish. Today will be a copy of yesterday’s weather with a chance of storms in the afternoon.

There was another pulse from Cannonsville overnight so we are starting off this morning at 668 cfs at Stilesville. The flow has peaked and is dropping back already. It should filter through the West Branch by the afternoon. It’s still at a fine level for wading and floating. Sometimes the pulses knock weeds loose so keep that in mind if you’re nymphing – especially above Hale Eddy. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. Definitely have your small olive box too. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahills towards dark. There are a few caddis around so that might be worth a shot on picky fish. Yesterday’s thunderstorms slid around us here on the lower West Branch. We had some wind and a few drops of rain in the afternoon but overall it was a non factor. There was no pulse from Cannonsville overnight so we are starting off this morning about where we’ve been most of the summer. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahills towards dark. There are a few caddis around so that might be worth a shot on picky fish. We have some cloud cover this morning with a 50% chance of some precip. Last night’s pulse of cold water from Cannonsville bumped the Stilesville flow to 950 cfs. The flow is already dropping this morning and should be back to normal by the afternoon. The pulse is designed to keep the water temperature below 75 degrees at Lordville. These pulses sometimes knock weeds loose so keep that in mind if you are nymphing. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahillswith a few caddis towards dark. Today is going to be hot at 93 degrees. We’ll start off with sunshine but should see some clouds move in this afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. Wunderground is saying there is a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms so keep an eye on the radar.
