Delaware River Report / Conditions June 8, 2020

The wind made dry fly fishing tough yesterday but people did find some fish willing to eat on top.  Today looks better with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North. We’ll have sunshine and 75 degrees by mid afternoon.  Last night was chilly so the water temps dropped a bit throughout the system.  Definitely a bonus for the Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem. The cool down is much needed until we see a bump in the cold water releases.  The green drakes are working their way up the system but caddis patterns are still catching a lot of fish.  A few march brown and gray fox spinners are out at night mixing with some coffin flies.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 7, 2020

The wind and bright sun made the fishing tough yesterday.  People did find some fish rising but most anglers we saw were nymphing until the wind dropped in the evening.  Today looks better with some clouds mixing with the sunshine.  Wind will still be up but not as bad as yesterday with 10 – 15 mph from the North.  We should see the air temp only reach 70 degrees today which should help the water temps.  Tonight we’ll drop in to the high 40’s.  Caddis are still active during the day mixed with a few sulphurs.  The green drakes are moving up the system so have a few of those ready.  Check the water temps before you fish.  The West Branch and upper East Branch are in good shape but the lower Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem at Lordville all peaked at 70 degrees or higher yesterday.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 6, 2020

We cool back down to the low 70’s tomorrow but today we’ll be back at 68 degrees with a few scattered thunderstorms in the morning.  Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.  The nighttime temps get lower over the next few days which should help the water temps on the lower East Branch and Mainstem.  Tan caddis patterns have still been the best producers but the big bugs are here too.  Some sulphurs are mixing with the caddis mid afternoon offering some shots at fishing earlier than we’ve expected.  Keep an eye on the riffles for sporadic slashing fish.  The water temps on the lower Beaverkill, the lower East Branch, and the Mainstem have crept back up and were pushing 70 degrees yesterday.  Double check the temps with a thermometer before you fish those rivers.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 5, 2020

Fish were slashing caddis mid day in the sunshine yesterday.  We’ve seen that quite a bit this Spring so don’t write off the bright sunny days.  The flows dropped a little as the runoff subsides but not enough to really affect the rivers.  There is still a good mix of bugs out there so keep most of your late Spring boxes handy.  Caddis and sulphurs seemed to be the answer yesterday.  The air temp will hit the high 70’s today with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  There is a 40% chance of rain in the afternoon but the accumulation looks negligible at less than 1/10″.  Cloud cover and a heavy mist would be perfect.  Water temps on the lower Beaverkill and lower East Branch hit 68 yesterday and both are starting off warmer this morning.  Check the water temp with a thermometer first if you plan on fishing those rivers.  The Mainstem at Lordville peaked at 65 degrees yesterday so keep an eye on that one too.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 4, 2020

We had some brief but heavy rain yesterday but the rivers came through it just fine.  Most of the storms broke up or slid South of us so the flows are starting off today pretty much where they started off yesterday.  We’re back in a warm spell so the air temp will hit the low 80’s today.  Mostly sunshine with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.  There are a lot of different bugs hatching right  now throughout the system.  You pretty much have to carry most of your late Spring patterns.  Caddis have been active during the day.  Different sections of river are seeing different mayfly hatches but be ready for anything.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 3, 2020

Yesterday ended up being a good day on the river.  Most people found fish eating either caddis, march browns, a few sulphurs, or gray fox.  We’re hearing a few reports of green drakes on some river sections so keep those handy.  The wind was low and the weather was pleasant overall.  Today will be cooler with the possibility of rain this morning with some storms in the afternoon.  A lot of thunderstorms slide south of us so we’re hoping that’s the case today.  If we do get hit we’ll do a mid day flow update but keep an eye on the latest flows by clicking the gauge links at the bottom of the post.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 2, 2020

The Cannonsville release has been increased slightly to 500 cfs.  We’re still at a good level for both floating and wading.  Today looks like a good weather day with the air temp in the high 60’s clods, and wind 7 – 10 mph from the South.  Caddis, olives, march browns, sulphurs, and gray fox.  We’ve seen a bit of everything out there so carry at least of few patterns that will cover most of the late Spring hatches.  A lot of these hatches are sporadic and come slowly through the afternoon.  The fish are used to seeing them so be patient and watch for the risers.  Blind casting march browns in the riffles can also be effective if you don’t want to wait.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 1, 2020

Some sections of river had decent caddis, march browns, and gray fox last night but the wind was not really helpful.  Sulphurs are still coming off in the evening and we should start to see spinner falls soon.  These are all sporadic hatching bugs so pick a spot and be patient.  The lower air temps have really helped the water temps so everything is looking good this morning.  It will be a little warmer today with the air temp hitting 65 degrees.  We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.  The flows are still dropping slowly from last week’s rain but we’re at a good level for wading and floating.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 31, 2020

Most of yesterday’s rain missed us and the river flows are down a bit from yesterday.  The cool night helped the water temps and most of the system’s temperatures are down a few degrees this morning.  Today will be even cooler with the air temp reaching the high 50’s.  We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds with wind from the North 10 – 20 mph.  This has been a very windy Spring!  At least now the leaves are in and it’s possible to find some protected areas to fish.  There are a lot of caddis on the door this morning along with a few march brown and gray fox spinners.  Nymphing has been effective during the day but it’s also a good time of year to blind cast march browns in the riffles.  The Upper Mainstem and Lower East Branch have cooled down enough that they are a possibility again.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 30, 2020

That was a brief but heavy rain that hit us yesterday morning.  We had a few more showers in the afternoon and it looks like we were hit again overnight.  The flow at Stilesville is 534 cfs.  It looks like the flow at Hale Eddy has peaked at 934 cfs and is beginning to drop.  The color looks much better than yesterday afternoon and is fishable.  We may see some showers this afternoon but Wunderground is showing the amount of precip to be .02″.  After today we shouldn’t see any additional rain until Tuesday.  The air temp is cooling down beginning today and we’ll see temps in the 70’s with nighttime temps in the 40’s this week.  Definitely a better weather trend!

We had a brief rainstorm this morning.  The West Branch peaked at just over 900 cfs and is already falling.  The river is off color but should clear quickly as the feeder creeks drop.  Keep an eye on the radar for the afternoon thunderstorms.  Hopefully they slide south of us.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 29, 2020

7:30 am update – We’ve had enough rain that the flows will come up from the runoff.  Check the latest flow by clicking on the gauges at the bottom of the page

Watching the weather we all predicted yesterday would have been a great day.  It was a tough one.  We did see some more march browns and gray fox hatching on the West Branch so at least there’s that.  We’ll just start over today.  We have some rain coming down this morning but so far the flow at Hale Eddy had remained flat at just over 600 cfs.  It will increase as the feeder stream flows come up so check the gauges below for the latest flow info.  The Beaverkill flow has bumped up so the lower East should climb by the afternoon.  We need the water to help the river temps on the East Branch and Mainstem.  Hopefully the olives hatch and the bigger bugs keep coming.  Bring a raincoat and check the latest flow info if you’re out there.  We may see a thunderstorm or two roll through today.  If there are dramatic changes to the flows we’ll do a mid day blog update.
