Delaware River Report / Conditions May 8, 2020

Yesterday fished well with good numbers of blue quills and hendricksons.  There were a lot of apple caddis in sections but we didn’t see a fish eat one off the surface.  The water column had to be full of them so they were probably gorging themselves underneath.  The lower flow and higher water temps definitely helped the fishing.  The release from Cannonsville has been increased to 600 cfs.  There is 815 cfs coming over the spill way. The flow at hale Eddy is 1,520 cfs this morning.  Click on the gauges below for the most current flow information.

Today looks like another nice day with the air temp reaching 50 degrees, wind 5 – 10 from the South, and cloud cover.  We’ll see some rain this afternoon turn into snow overnight.  Snow accumulation should be less than 1″.  Tonight and tomorrow will be cold but the 50’s return on Sunday.

The release from Cannonsville was decreased for routine maintenance.  The release may be increased once the work is complete so check the Stilesville Gauge every once in a while today just in case.  Yesterday we saw decent numbers of blue quill mixed with hendricksons.  Definitely a few olives out there too.  Today looks like a good one ahead with the air temp reaching 59, sun giving way to afternoon clouds, and wind 10 – 15 from the North.  Similar to yesterday with a bit more sun and warmth.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 6, 2020

Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day.  It was breezy at times but overall one of the nicest days this Spring.  Today looks good with some cloud cover moving in and maybe a bit of rain starting around lunch time.  Wind will be from the East 5 – 10 mph.  Hendricksons, blue quills, and caddis will cover most of what you see out there.  The water flows are dropping which should concentrate he bugs and make the fish more comfortable to feed.  The release from Cannonsville will be decreased throughout the day.  662 cfs is spilling over the dam.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 5, 2020

Yesterday was windy with a bit of rain but some people braved it and were rewarded.  The wind gusts definitely made nymphing and streamers the best method.  Today seems a little better with sunshine, 54 degrees, and wind 10 mph from the North.  The water temps didn’t climb much yesterday and are starting off a little lower this morning after a cool night.  The sunshine will help them climb back up today.  The water flows are dropping slowly as the runoff subsides but Cannonsville and Pepacton are both still spilling.

Some people did well yesterday and other people struggled to find consistent rising fish.  Blue quills, hendricksons, and a few different caddis species came off in the afternoon.  Fish got on them in the slow water and edges.  Some fish fed consistently while others were very sporadic.  Luck and patience went a long way yesterday.  Both reservoirs are still spilling so the water is up.  The East and Main flows are dropping slowly as the Beaverkill drops.  The West Branch flow is staying pretty level with the spill.  Today will be cooler hitting 54 degrees with some clouds and sunshine.  Wind will be up a bit hitting the teens from the North.

Both reservoris are still spilling.  The East Branch flow dropped slightly and the West Branch increased slightly.  It’s going to take a few days for the runoff to filter through the system. People did find fish rising in yesterday’s high water.  If there are enough bugs on the water the fish will find a place to eat.  Caddis, hendricksons, and a lot of blue quills are hatching.  Today looks like another great day to be on the water.  70 degrees, sun and clouds, and wind 10 – 15 from the West.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are spilling.  There is a lot of water in the system this morning so if you are wading look to the small feeder streams and upper reaches that will drop first.  Click on the USGS links below for the latest flow data.  On the bigger rivers most people will probably do streamer runs but if the bugs hatch fish will rise on the slow edges and in the long slower pools. It looks like the West Branch has some color still but not enough to bother the fish or bugs.  It’s going to be a beautiful day with the air temp hitting 60 degrees, sunshine, and wind from the North 10 – 15.  A little less wind would be ideal but the sunshine is awesome.

The Eastern side of the system flows are running really high this morning.  Pepacton Reservoir is spilling and there is a lot of water running down the Beaverkill and East Branch.  The Mainstem flow will continue to rise today.  The West Branch flow at Hale Eddy is 3,500 cfs and looks like it peaked already and is beginning to drop.  The flow below Hale will be much larger since the feeder streams are moving pretty good this morning.  It will take a few days for the water to filter through the system.  We have a slight chance of a rain shower today but otherwise the next rain isn’t until Wednesday.  We’re in for a beautiful weekend.  Check the latest flows in the links below before heading out.

We are under a flood watch this morning.  It sounds like some areas will have localized heavy rain between 1.5″ and 3″.  That’s quite a spread so it seems they really don’t know how much rain is coming and where the heaviest fall will be.  Looking at the hourly forecast the heaviest rain should happen overnight.  So be careful if you’re out there.  Wind will be 20 – 30 mph from the South which isn’t so fantastic by itself.  Yesterday was decent when the wind was down.  There were bugs out there for a couple of hours in the mid afternoon.

Yesterday was great day to be out.  It felt like Summer when the sun was shining.  The wind wasn’t too bad and there were a lot of calm stretches.  Blue Quills, Hendricksons, and caddis were out in good numbers in the afternoon.  There were enough fish up to keep everyone busy.  Today will be 56 degrees with 15 – 20 mph wind from the South.  The flows are still a bit high throughout the system but are dropping for now.  Keep an eye on the rain coming Thursday and Thursday night.  We may see quite a bit that will bring the flows up.  Hopefully Wunderground is wrong and it slides South of us.

Today looks like the nicest day  of the week.  We should hit 60 degrees with a mix of clouds and sun.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.  We’ll see rain the rest of the week through Saturday night.  If Wunderground is correct we’ll see some good accumulation on Thursday but otherwise it looks like light showers.  Night time temperatures are improving too which should help the water temps in the long run.  If you are fishing the Delaware bring most of your early Spring flies.  It looks like a good mix of bugs out there.  The flows are dropping but keep an eye on the gauges this week with all of the rain coming through.

All of the river flows are up this morning.  The flow at Hale Eddy is beginning to fall back.  The flow on the Beaverkill looks like it is still going up at 7,000 cfs.  As that water works it’s way down the flows will go up on the lower EB and Mainstem.  Double check the latest flow info on the the links below.  It rained most of the day yesterday with a little bit of sleet at the end.  Today looks better with the possibility of some afternoon showers, a high of 46 degrees, and wind from the North at 10 mph.
