Delaware River Report / Conditions September 25, 2021

Now that the runoff on the West Branch has subsided the release from Cannonsville has been increased to 1,400 again.  The West cleared up quite a bit by last evening but still had a little color.  The high release will also have the normal tint to the water we get every year.  The rest of the rivers are dropping but everything is still high.  Wading is not a great option on the big rivers.  Look for the small feeder streams for safe places to wade.  We should hit 72 degrees with cloud cover this afternoon.  Wind will be light and variable.  Streamers and nymphs to start off with.  The olives may hatch in the aftenoon.  Pick water that is slow enough for the fish to rise in.

The West Branch at Hale Eddy flow peaked over 2,500 cfs but is already dropping and is 1,900 cfs this morning.  There is a lot of water coming down the feeder streams below Hale Eddy so the lower West is higher out front.  Wading is not an option but you can fish the West Branch in a boat today. It is off color so it looks like a streamer day to start.  It should begin to clear a bit by this afternoon.  The East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem are all extremely high and not fishable today.  The rain should be finished and we’ll see the sun today. 68 degrees with wind 5 – 10 from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 23, 2021

We woke up to wind and rain this morning.  It looks like the steadiest rain will start around noon and go through the night.  We may see as much as an inch so keep an eye on the river flows if you are out there this afternoon.  The feeder streams will go blow out first.  Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the South again.  The release from Cannonsville is still around 1,000 cfs.  That opens up a few spots for wading this morning. Check the gauge links below to see the latest flows.  This storm has the potential to blow the rivers out this afternoon.

The release from Stilesville has been cut back slightly and the flow at 6:30 am is 1,030 cfs.  They’ve been stepping the release back so click on the Stilesville gauge link below for the latest information.  We are still finding fish eating olives on top.  The olives still vary in size from #18 – 26.  Luckily the fish seem okay with the larger ones for the most part.  A few Isonychias and Heptagenias are around too.  Nymphs and streamers are also bringing some fish to net.  Today we’ll have good cloud cover but the wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the South.  We may see some rain in the afternoon.  Tomorrow there is a better chance of rain.  The forecast has been different every time we’ve checked so keep an eye on it.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 21, 2021

We had quite a bit of sun yesterday but there were some olives in the afternoon that offered some dry fly fishing.  Fish were also landed on streamers and nymphs.  We should have more clouds today that should help the fishing start a little earlier.  The rivers are still high and the best wading is still on the Beaverkill / Willowemoc Rivers.  the West Branch at Stilesville is still 1,400 cfs.  There is that Fall tint to the river that we seem to get every year but it hasn’t stopped the fish from rising.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 20, 2021

Yesterday was a lot of sun with a few clouds.  There were some blue wing olives out and fish were landed on dries, nymphs, and streamers.  The high water has kept the streamer fishing going- especially when there are clouds out.  the cool nights are dropping the water temps  on the Mainstem and freestones.  Again the Beaverkill and Willowemoc offer the best wade opportunities.  Today will be a lit like yesterday with a high of 75 degrees and sunshine.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 19, 2021

No change in the release from Cannonsville overnight. It sounds like we’re going to have the 1,400 cfs release for a bit.  People are wading in a few spots but that’s tough.  The Beaverkill / Willowemoc flows are still dropping and there are places to wade on those rivers. Yesterday we found scattered olives and some fish eating during the day. There were a few Heptagenias and Isonychias around too.  The dry fly fishing dropped off towards evening when the fog rolled in.  We had a brief rain shower mid afternoon but not enough to affect the flows.  Today will be sunny with a high of 72 degrees.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 18, 2021

The flow at Stilesville is steady at 1,400 cfs. hale Eddy has evened out around 1,700.  Wading is tough but some people are trying it.  It is fishing with nymphs and streamers.  there is some dry fly action but you have to fins water the fish will eat small olives in.  The West Branch does have the normal fall color to it.  The Beaverkill / Willowemoc have dropped quite a bit and will have more options for wading today.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 17, 2021

The rivers are still running high but are beginning to drop slowly.  The West Branch will drop a bit but will stay high with a release around 1,400 cfs from Cannonsville.  The larger release is adding some color to the river but it is still fishable.  Wading is not recommended.  We found fish rising yesterday but most fish were landed on nymphs and streamers. The Beaverkill / Willowemoc will offer the first wadeable water.  Today should be a mix of clouds and sun again with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Some of the thunderstorms hit us last night and there is a lot of water moving through the system this morning.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy is just under 2,000 cfs and is beginning to drop. The release is around 1,400 so the flow will drop a bit today but it will stay high.  There is some color to the water but it is fishable.  Wading is not recommended.  There is a lot of water coming in from the feeders downstream of the gauge.  Streamers worked yesterday in the rain along with some action on wet flies.  Today will be much cooler with some clouds and sunshine mixed.  74 degrees with light and variable winds.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 15, 2021

The release from Cannonsville was increased and the flow at Stilesville is 1,330 and climbing this morning.  So far we’ve had a few showers but not enough to affect the river conditions.  Wunderground shows around 1/2″ of rain today mainly from thunderstorms.  Wading will be tough without the rain so definitely keep a close eye on the river gauges below.  The increased release on the West Branch may increase the tint of the water but it will be fishable.  Streamers may be a good option- especially if we get hit with the rain.  Otherwise olives and a few Heptagenia.  There have been ants out there in some form almost every day.

Delaware River Report / Conditions September 14, 2021

Yesterday fished well for us overall with a mix of olives and small flying ants.  There were a few Isonychias and cahills in the mix but the olives have been the main hatch for a while now.  Thy ranged from size 18 to 26.  A few fish wanted the tiny flies but overall you can get away with an #18.  Nymphing or swinging wets were also productive before the hatch.

We have a few thunderstorms moving though the area this morning.  The total rainfall should be under 1/4″ today.  Check the gauges below for the latest flow data just to be sure.  A little rain and good cloud cover should make decent fishing conditions today.  81 degrees and wind 5 – 10 mph from the South

If the rain impacts the flows significantly we’ll do a mid day blog update.
