Delaware River Report / Conditions July 7, 2021

The West Branch at Hale Eddy is 715 cfs and falling this morning.  We had a couple isolated storms late yesterday and again overnight that added some runoff to the rivers.  The West Branch color is fine.  Today sounds quite a bit like yesterday.  We’ll start off with some clouds, hit 88 degrees, and have a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  All of these storms have been isolated so it’s tough to really tell if we’ll get hit. The rain has been pushing the olive hatches.  Sulphurs, cahills, and isonychias are around in decent numbers too.  There is some fog this morning but that won’t be a problem once the wind picks up. Delaware River Report / Conditions July 6, 2021

The runoff has subsided and most of the rivers re down to normal flows.  The West Branch and Upper East Branch are your best bets for cold water and hatches.  The colder sections are getting mid day sulphurs while the lower sections turn on early and again as the sun drops.  If we get a storm the hatches may push early on the lower West.  Especially if we get a steady rain.  Today will be warm hitting 86 degree.  We should have decent cloud cover with a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms.

The Lower East Branch, Mainstem, and Beaverkill at Cooks Falls are all starting off over 70 degrees today.   It’s time to give those rivers a break and fish cold water areas.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 5, 2021

The West Branch flow has settled back to where it was before all of the rain.  The flow at Hale Eddy is 600 cfs and clear.  There is still a lot of water in the East Branch but that should drop quite a bit today.  Yesterday offered up a good mix and people landed fish on streamers, nymphs, and dry flies.  We’ll have sun today and a high of 86 degrees.  We should see the sulphurs in the afternoon on the river sections with the coldest water.  The lower river sections should happen as the sun drops.  Nymphing will be your best bet until the hatches start.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 4, 2021

We had some additional thunderstorms and rain hit over night but the West Branch looks fine this morning. There is slight tint in the water but it is definitely fishable. The color in the water will probably help the fishing on the lower West today.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy peaked at 900 cfs again but is already dropping.  Oquaga Creek peaked at just under 100 cfs so most of the runoff is coming from other creeks.  That should mean a sharper drop at Hale Eddy and less color in the water.  These were very spotty and isolated storms.  The East Branch and the Beaverkill flows are up this morning and probably adding a lot of color to the Main.  Today we’ll see more sun and a high of 76 degrees. wind will be 5 -10 from the North.  Olives, sulphurs, Isonychias, cahill, and tan caddis should cover most of your needs.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 3, 2021

We were hit with a decent rain storm last night and all of the rivers flows are up.  The West Branch is off color.  The flow at Hale Eddy peaked around 900 cfs and has already dropped back to 600 this morning.  A few creeks are probably blown out but they should be dropping too based on how fast the river is dropping.  Oquaga Creek peaked around 50 cfs so there are other creeks adding the color and volume.  The river should be clear in Stilesville. The flow is a steady 521 cfs there.  Wunderground shows another 1/4″ of rain today.   A lot of people will be throwing streamers this morning.  Close to Cannonsville should be fine for dries and nymphs. If we don’t get additional rain we should clear enough to find fish eating on the lower West this afternoon.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 2, 2021

We finally had a decent afternoon rain.  The West Branch flow stayed steady and is 565 cfs and clear this morning.  The Beaverkill and Lower East Branch did get much needed increase in flows and a drop in temperatures.  It;s cloudy this morning with a decent shot of another 1/4″ of rain today.  The West Branch should be fine through that too.  Wind will be 5 – 10 from the North with the air temp reaching 73 degrees.  We had decent olives yesterday with a mix of a few sulphurs, cahills, and Isonychias.

Delaware River Report / Conditions July 1, 2021

We’ve had rain on and off since 6 yesterday evening.  Most of it has soaked into the ground and we have a small bump in flow at Hale Eddy but the river looks fine out front.  The front also brought a well needed drop in the air temp and we are at 68 degrees this morning.  We should see another 1/4″ of rain today.  The wind is perfect at 3 – 5 mph. There’s a good chance the clouds and rain will push the hatches a bit and we may see olives, sulphurs, and a few cahills / Stenocrons a little earlier today.  It definitely feels like an olive day.  The Isonychia hatch is picking up and accounting for a lot of our fish this week

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 30, 2021

The release from Cannonsville was increased for a brief time overnight.  The flow is already dropping at hale Eddy this morning and will likely settle where it’s been around 530 cfs.  We had some rain overnight but most of the water soaked right into the ground.  We expect that to happen with most of the rain today.  Sulphurs, olives, and a few Isonychias are hatching mid day in the colder water.  There are some cahills / Stenocrons hatching too so #14 yellow mayflies patterns are still producing fish.  Hopefully we get some rain that pushes the bugs earlier on the mid West Branch.  If it misses us the hatches will probably come as the sun drops.  The air temp cools down to the high 70’s tomorrow but today we’ll be in the high 80’s.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 29, 2021

The Cannonsville release was bumped and dropped back overnight to send a bit of cold water down the mainstem. The flow is already dropping and should end up around 550 cfs (where we were yesterday).  There is also a slight increase in flow at Harvard this morning.  The tailwater temps stayed fine despite the heat yesterday.  Today will start off sunny with a chance of some afternoon storms.  We actually have a decent chance of rain for the next few days.  The freestones definitely need the water so hopefully Wunderground is correct.  There are some sulphurs hatching on the upper river sections during the day.  The bugs happened as the sun dropped on the mid to lower West.  That timing could shift earlier if we really get some rain.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 28, 2021

The release from Cannonsville was increased to almost 790 cfs late yesterday.  This was likely  done to meet the water temp requirements on the Mainstem.  It was a brief pulse so the flow is already dropping back on the upper West Branch.  It will probably level out where we’ve been around 500 cfs.  Today will be another hot one with a mix of clouds and sunshine. Wind 5 – 10 from the South.  The coldest water will be the best bet for afternoon hatches.  Nymphing or blind casting the riffles could pay off on the other river sections.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 27, 2021

The release from Cannonsville was increased by 30 cfs.  Not enough to change anything on the river today as far as fishing but every drop of cold water helps. The air temp will be close to 90 today with wind 10 – 15 mph from the South.  We’ll have a good amount of sunshine.  The best shot at daytime dry fly action will be in the areas with the colder water.  Yesterday seemed to be spotty but fished well overall.  Patience seemed to pay off.  Most of the fish came on isonychia emergers and sulphurs.  Nymphing worked well early.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 26, 2021

We have good cloud cover this morning may even see a stray thunderstorm. Wind will be 10 – 15 from the South.  so it definitely looks better than many of the sunny days we’ve been dealing with lately.  Hopefullythe clouds push some olives along with the sulphurs and cahills a little earlier in the day.  Nymphing worked well yesterday before the hatches and should be a good bet again today.  Isonychias and cahills are still producing in some riffles.
