Delaware River Report: July 22, 2022

For the third day in a row we’re getting a pulse of cold water on both rivers. Wunderground is calling for a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon which could bring a much needed break in the hot weather. Even so, look for fish in the colder water close to the dams. We had reports of good hatches of olives mid-day and the sulphurs continue to hatch in the evening. Keep your eye out for the occasional large Cahill.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

What’s Hatching:
Slate Drake – 12-2xl – 12- Isonychia bicolor
Sulphur – #16 – 20 – E. dorothea
Light Cahill – #14 – E. vitreus (male), E. invaria, Stenacron spp.
Dark Blue Wing Olive – #18 – 20 – deficiens, lata
Tiny Blue Wing Olive – #22 – 26 – Pseudocloeon sp.
Yellow Sally Stonefly – #14 – Isoperla spp.
Tan Spotted Sedge #16 – 18 – Hydropsyche sp.

NYSDEC is again releasing a 12 hour 200cfs pulse from Cannonsville and a 6 hour 100cfs pulse from Pepacton due to the high temperatures. The pulse at Cannonsville will last until 11:00am today, the Pepacton pulse has already been completed. The Lordville gauge’s temperature reading has been malfunctioning since Tuesday so it’s tough to tell if the pulse is affecting the downstream temperatures as intended. With the continued warm weather stay where it’s coolest. We’re seeing mainly Sulphurs with a few Isos.

NYSDEC is releasing a 12 hour 200cfs pulse from Cannonsville and a 6 hour 100cfs pulse from Pepacton due to the expected high temperatures today. The pulse at Cannonsville will last until 11:00am today, the Pepacton pulse has already been completed. It is forecast to hit over 90° here today. Look for the coldest water and wait until it cools down in the evening. We saw sulphurs in the evening yesterday along with a handful of Iso spinners. Have a few different sulphur patterns with you since the fish can be quite particular.

There was a short bout of rain yesterday evening that didn’t change the flows but it did help with the water temperatures. The next few days will be much hotter and the cooler water is certainly a good thing. With the warm weather today look for cooler water closer to the dams and after the sun drops. We’re still seeing sulphurs, small olives and the occasional Iso.

We have some light rain falling this morning but not enough to affect the flows. The river looks clear out in Home Pool under the fog and we will post an update if there are any changes. Wunderground is calling for thunderstorms this afternoon so we may still see some extra water. With the cloud cover today, make sure to bring your olives as well as the sulphurs.

There was another 100 cfs pulse of cold water on the West Branch overnight. The levels at Hale Eddy are on their way back down this morning and should level out by mid-day. Yesterday’s clouds stuck around a lot longer than usual and provided some good mid-day fishing. We saw sulphurs early and then again later on, as well as a good Pseudo hatch in the afternoon. Make sure you have a few different sulphur patterns with you – they often like seeing some variation. Today will be another warm day, look to the colder water closer to the dam during the day or wait for the sun to drop in the evening.

We’ve had another cool night which has kept the temperatures in a better range. The weather forecast is calling for clouds and slightly lower air temperatures today, though the sun is probably going to show up at some point. Mid-day sulphurs are still the main hatch, with some small olives mixed in. Keep some Isos handy for the riffles and look for nymphing spots lower on the West Branch.

Wunderground describes today as having “abundant sunshine” so we should continue with our normal summer fishing. Mid afternoon sulphurs on the coldest river sections mixed with a few cahills and olives. There are a few Isonychias there too. The lower river sections will fish best with nymphs and wets until the sun drops. Then a few sulphurs, cahills, olives, and Isonychias. We’re coming off a cool night so there is fog on some river sections. That should burn off early. We’ll hit 82 degrees with light and variable wind.

We were hit with some additional thunderstorms yesterday but the West Branch looks fine this morning. There may be a small tint but we can see the rocks under the water on the other side of the river so it’s definitely fish able. Yesterday fished the same with mid day small sulphurs, cahills, and olives in the coldest river sections. The lower sections has some sulphurs but mostly olives as the sun dropped. We’re back to sunshine today with the air temp hitting 78 degrees. Wind will be 5- 10 mph from the North.

We had some thunderstorms pass through in the evening that brought some rain. The West Branch flows did not budge and the river looks fine this morning. The Beaverkill and East Branch flows are up a bit. So everything should fish the same with no real change. Afternoon sulphurs on the coldest river sections with some cahills and Isonychias. The lower West should fish with nymphs and wets early with sulphurs, cahills, and a few isonychias coming in the evening. Caddis are still around so have a few patterns with you. On the lower West we’re seeing most of them in the morning. Today will be cooler hitting 82 degrees. We’ll start off with sun but see some clouds move in during the afternoon. there is another chance of thunderstorms. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

There was a another quick pulse release from Cannonsville overnight. This again was timed for extra cold water to hit the Mainstem to keep it below 75 degrees at Lordville. The West Branch flow is already dropping back to normal. We have some suns poking through the clouds this morning but we should cloud up and actually get some rain this afternoon. Total rainfall should be ,14″ which will soak right into the ground. There is a chance of thunderstorms so keep an eye on the radar. The mid to lower WB should dry fly fish in the evening as the sun drops. Small sulphurs and small olives are making up the bulk of the hatches. There are some cahills, Isonychias, and a few caddis on the water too.

There was a quick pulse release from Cannonsville overnight. This was timed for extra cold water to hit the Mainstem to keep it below 75 degrees at Lordville. The extra release last a couple of hours and the flow is already dropping back to normal. It won’t really be noticeable and shouldn’t affect the fishing at all. Today will have “Plenty of Sunshine” and hit 85 degrees according to Wunderground. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South. So normal conditions when the best daytime activity will be on the river sections with the coldest water. The mid to lower WB should dry fly fish in the evening as the sun drops. Small sulphurs and small olives are making up the bulk of the hatches. There are some cahills, Isonychias, and a few caddis on the water too.
