Delaware River Report / Conditions June 6, 2021

Yesterday was a tough one with the sun and heat combination.  Early and really later were the best periods for dry fly fishing.  Nymphing was definitely the best bet during the day.  The wind definitely did not help anyone out there.  Today will be hot and sunny again but at least the wind will only be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  If you see bugs during the day and no risers in the pools concentrate on the broken water where they’ll feel more comfortable to rise.  Nymph and / or swing wets in that same water.

 The lower East Branch, lower Beaverkill, and Mainstem will be too hot to fish today.  Please give these rivers a break and fish the cold water areas.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 5, 2021

Yesterday was tougher than it should have been but people still landed some nice fish.  We had everything from bright sun to a brief heavy rain so it all seemed a little unsettled.  Most of the storms seemed to slide south of us so the rivers are at the same levels as yesterday morning.  We have some heat coming today with the air temp hitting 88 degrees with sunshine.  Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the West.  Caddis may be active during the day if we get ome wind breaks.  It looks like a good day to start off nymphing and get ready for the hatches as the sun drops in the evening.  Bright sun and heat means it’s time to watch the afternoon water temps on the Lower East Branch, Mainstem, and Beaverkill.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 4, 2021

The West Branch flow at Hale Eddy went up to 791 cfs this morning.  It’s runoff from Qpuaga Creek which has bumped to 155 cfs from the rain.  Not a big change and the other river flows haven’t budged below the dams.  Clarity is fine.  The West Branch flow above Cannonsville is 860 cs so most of the rain went North of us.  According to Wunderground we have a 50% chance of scattered storms to day but they have the rainfall total as .06″.  We’re warming up and the  air temp will hit 76 degrees with light wind.  Yesterday was a nice overcast day and the rain held off until the evening.  The wind was definitely less than predicted here on the lower West Branch.  There was the usual mix of bugs and people found fish rising.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 3, 2021

We should see some light rain this morning.  Afternoon storms may develop but a lot of those tend to slide south of us.  Wunderground forecasts the rain total at .17″.  Yesterday’s rain did little to the flows and all of the rivers look good this morning.  We had a number of different bugs hatching at the same time yesterday and they hatches seemed to come in flushes.  When the bugs were there the fish were up.  Patience paid off.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 2, 2021

Yesterday we had more sun than Wunderground predicted but the bugs still came and people were able to find fish.  It was a good mix of bugs so some fish took a few changes to figure out.  Overall it was a decent day on the water.  Today we’re starting off with some sunshine but should see some clouds roll in by lunch.  Wunderground is showing some light rain by noon with a total of .15″ for the day.  Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.  It sounds like a really good day to be out there.

Delaware River Report / Conditions June 1, 2021

The release from Cannonsville has been increased slightly to 500 cfs.  It’s not a drastic change so there won’t be a noticeable difference for wading between yesterday and today.  The rivers are looking good this morning and starting off at decent water temperatures.  We should see more cloud cover today with the air temp reaching 74 degrees.  Less wind at 5 – 10 mph from the West.  There are a lot of different bugs hatching right now so the last few days have been both productive and a lot of fun.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 31, 2021

There were a lot of bugs on the water yesterday afternoon and the fish seemed really happy about it.  Everyone we saw had targets.  It seemed to die off early in the cold weather but hopefully today’s warmer weather extends the evening fishing.  It was a good mix of sulphurs, blue wing olives, gray fox, march browns, and cahills.  Plus some  river sections had green drakes.  A little rain this morning will give way to some sunshine this afternoon.  The air temp will hit 68 degrees.  Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 30, 2021

The river flows have dropped back after the rain and everything looks good this morning,  It’s going to be 50 degrees today with some showers developing. Total rainfall today should be 1/4″ or less according to Wunderground. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.  Not a bad day to be on the water if you dress correctly.  Yesterday was a good bug day with good opportunities.  We received a lot of good fish pictures.  The sulphur hatch in getting stronger along with the March Brown and Gray Fox hatches.  There are some green drakes and brown drakes around.  Today is another day to make sure you have tiny blue wing olives.  Tan caddis have been a mainstay over the last few weeks

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 29, 2021

The West Branch is clear in Homepool at 6 am.  If that changes or the flows change dramatically we’ll do another update.

The rain should end around 10 am this morning.  The West Branch at Hale Eddy flow has peaked and is beginning to drop.  The flows on the East Branch, Beaverkill, and Mainstem are still climbing at 6 am this morning.  Click on the gauge link below for the latest flow information.  Today will be 51 degrees with wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.  We may see another 1/4″ of rain tomorrow.  Along with the bugs listed below we are finding a few green drakes and brown drakes.  And definitely pseudos so carry your tiny  blue wing olive box.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 28, 2021

We should see 57 degrees, wind 5 -10 from the East, cloudy with rain in this afternoon.  Daytime rainfall should be around 1/4″.  We should see another 3/4″ of rain overnight.  If Wunderground has this one right it should fish.  We saw decent bugs yesterday but the wind and sun kept the fish a little spotty.  March browns, gray fox, and a few sulphurs.  Tan caddis we around in really good numbers most of the afternoon.  We have some cool, wet weather for the next few days.  Hopefully that drops some water temps and increases the flows a little.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 27, 2021

The rivers came through yesterday’s storms just fine.  Most of the storms were brief with heavy rain that soaked right into the ground.  The flows bumped up a little on some sections but overall it’s pretty significant.  Conditions are pretty much where they were yesterday morning.  The rain did push some bugs.  Blue wing olives and some caddis were out during the lighter rain offering some decent dry fly shots.  Today we’re back to sunshine with some afternoon clouds.  The air temp will be much cooler peaking at 70 degrees.  Wind will be 10 – 15 from the North.

The Mainstem at Lordville and the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls both peaked over 70 degrees yesterday.  Despite the cooler air temps it’s time to give the warm river sections a break until they cool back down.

Delaware River Report / Conditions May 26, 2021

Yesterday showed a bit more sun than the forecast had called for but people found fish.  Nymphing worked well early and people did find fish on dries in the evening.  Caddis, the last of the small hendricksons, march browns, gray fox, and the beginning of the sulphurs are out there.  Definitely have your blue wing olives.  No sign of green drakes yet but they will be here soon.  Most of the surface activity was in the evening.  Today is going to be warmer with the air temp jumping into the high 80’s.  We should have cloud cover and some much needed rain.  Wunderground is only showing 1/10″ total for today.  Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the South.  We cool back down again tomorrow.
