Delaware River Report / Conditions August 31, 2020
It’s 49 degrees this morning and should only hit 73 today. We’ll have sun mixed with a few clouds and nor real wind. It looks like a great day to be on the water. The lower air temps should help the river temps- especially if the clouds stick around. Nymphing was good over the weekend with some dry fly action with tiny olives. There are still some cahills / stenos around and caddis. The flying ants are here but they are unpredictable. Definitely have some in your box just in case.

At 6:30 this morning the gauges show the river flows pretty much back to normal after Thursday’s rain. We do have some light rain falling this morning but so far everything seems fine. Today we have a chance of isolated thunderstorms so conditions will depend on where the storms hit. If anything dramatic happens to the flows we’ll do a mid day update. Keep an eye on the latest flows by clicking on the gauge links below.
The rivers cleared up nicely and looked good yesterday afternoon. There were a lot of flying ants around plus a few olives. It looks like another

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 28, 2020
We had some heavy thunderstorms pass through last night and all of the river flows are up this morning. The West Branch at Hale Eddy is already dropping is is at 1,080 cfs. Stilesville is only flowing at 461 cfs so the river is fine above Oquaga Creek. The last two days of cloud and rain have pushed the olives and we’re finding quite a few on the buildings every morning. Today looks good for streamers but keep and eye on the foam lines and tailouts for rising fish. The lower West has 6 – 8″ of visibility and should clear more throughout the day. Good looking for streamers but it is clear enough for fish to eat in the slow water. We got lucky with this storm.
Today’s weather sounds pretty good with the air temp hitting 78 degrees, wind 5 – 10 mph from the North, and cloud cover. We may see a bit of rain overnight totally 1/4″.

The release from Cannonsville has been increased this morning to 500 cfs. We woke up to some light rain and according to Wunderground should end up with just over 1/4″ by the end of the day. The rain looks intermittent on the hourly forecast but we should keep the clouds. The ground is dry so it should soak up a lot of the precip. There is a chance of some thunderstorms so keep an eye on the radar. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the West. Definitely have your olives handy today. If the wind does come find a protected area. The clouds and light rain so far make it look like a great fishing day. We’d rather deal with the wind than another sunny day in the 90’s. If the thunderstorms do hit and the flows change dramatically we will do mid day blog updates but check the gauge links below for the latest flow information.

We had a couple of brief rainstorms yesterday that brought out some olives. The fish were happy during the rain and people landed some fish on dries. The sun popped out in the afternoon and nymphing / wets were the better bet. Fish were eating on top again towards dark with a mix of olives and few caddis. Today is a whole new ballgame with the air temp only reaching 73 degrees. Wind will be 10 – 25 mph from the North as this front pushes through. We shouldn’t see any rain until tonight. We warm up again tomorrow tomorrow to the low 80’s but we should see a bit over 1/4″ of rain. That should be good for the fishing.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 25, 2020
We woke up to a little rain this morning. The front that brought the rain should drop the air temp back to the low 80’s today with wind 10 – 15 from the North. The total rainfall should be less than 1/4″. We had some other thunderstorms go north and South of us yesterday but aside from brief clod cover we didn’t see much out of them. So far the river flows are steady so everything is clear and looking good for today. It looks like a good olive day and hopefully the weather pushes some isonychias. We’re seeing more caddis as Fall aproaches too. Tonight we drop to 54 degrees so that combined with the cloud cover today should help the water temps on the other rivers.
The lower Beaverkill, lower East Branch, and Mainstem temperatures are all peaking over 70 degrees. Give those rivers a break until they cool down.

Today we have a better shot of some afternoon thunderstorms. Wunderground is calling the odds about 40%. Total rainfall will only be .03″ but the cloud cover will be a welcome sight. Wind will be 5 – 10 from the South. While the nights are still cooler we’ve slid back into summer like days after being spoiled with cool weather last week. Hopefully the temps break over the next couple of days. Nymphing will be your best bet early but there has been some trico activity mid morning. It’s been spotty and pool to pool so move around and look for the clouds of spinners. We’re seeing olives and caddis once the sun drops in the evening. There are more isonychias being spotted but it seems a lot of them are coming off after dark with the stenos / cahills. Those hatches will shift to earlier in the day once the water temps drop back a few more degrees.

Delaware River Report / Conditions August 23, 2020
Today is going to be a lot like yesterday except a couple of degrees warmer. There was a pretty heavy fog on the river this morning but it is already beginning to lift at 7 am. Wunderground is giving us a 20% chance of thunderstorms so we’ll be dealing with sunshine most of the day. There are still some tricos out there in the morning. Nymphing or swinging wets will be your best bet during the day. In the evening we’ve been seeing some olives and caddis. A few isonychias and cahills / stenos are around too. If you’re looking for dry fly activity check the water temps and concentrate on areas that peak around 61 degrees or less. Areas that peak in the mid 60’s are getting a lot of bugs after dark.

Nymphing was the best bet during the day yesterday but there were fish rising in the evening. I looked like mostly small olives on the water with a few caddis mixed in. Today looks similar with the air temp reaching 85 degrees and mostly sunshine. We may see some clouds move in during the afternoon along with some potential thunderstorms. The storms seem like a long shot at 20% but hopefully we get the clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. It looks like they pushed our potential rain off to Monday but it should be less than 1/4″. The warmer weather and potential storms create great conditions for flying ants so definitely keep those patterns handy this week.

Today will be warmer than yesterday with the air temp creeping back up into the mid 80’s. Luckily the nights will stay cool and we should drop back to 60 degrees tonight. Olives and caddis shave been our mainstays with a few isonychias and left over sulphurs mixed in for good measure. There are still tricos in the morning but like always if you see them and don’t find fish eating move. Nymphing or swinging wets will probably be your best bets during the day today but blind casting an isonychia or caddis in the riffles should also work well. The flow at Stilesville is 408 cfs and the flow at Hale Eddy is just under 600 cfs.

We had a mix of sun and clouds yesterday. Water temps on the lower West peaked in the low 60’s so we some dry fly activity in the late afternoon / evening. Olives and caddis were the main hatches along with some cahills and one or two isonychias. Everything looks good this morning and it’s 49 degrees outside. We’ll see more sun today with the air temp reaching the high 70’s. Wind should be a non factor. The release hotline is saying we have a release of 500 cfs from Cannonsville but the flow at Stilesville is 438 cfs. We don’t see any rain in the forecast until Sunday.

The lower West Branch seemed a little slower for dry fly fishing last night compared to Monday. The bright sun heated the water up a couple of degrees more. Nymphing was still good and people did catch fish on dries – just not as many bugs as the night before. The Upper West stayed colder during the day. Today looks like a copy of yesterday with sunshine, a high of 73, and wind 5 – 10 from the North. We may see a few clouds pass through but shouldn’t see any rain. The release from Cannonsville was decreased slightly, so slightly it doesn’t even matter. Not sure why they did that. Olives, a few cahills, and isonychias we’re spotted last night. Watch the water temps and stay where the river is 62 degrees or less. You’ll see more bugs in cooler water right now.
