Delaware River Report: May 18, 2022

The wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North today. We’ll see 66 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. That’s the real story after yesterday’s 20 mph wind. The rivers fished during the lulls with caddis, small hendricksons, and a few march browns. The wind made nymphing a good option by default when it was blowing. The runoff has pretty much subsided on the Eastern side of the drainage and the Beaverkill flow has dropped back under 500 cfs. It’s time to have some sulphurs in your box just in case. They can’t be too far off.

Delaware River Report: May 17, 2022

Yesterday’s storms were scattered and a bit unpredictable. We had breif perids of rain and wind on the lower West Branch while other people had measurable amounts of hail. Overall the flows look good this morning with slight increases from runoff. The rivers are already dropping this morning. The West Branch is clear and still fine for wading and floating. The march brown hatch is picking up and we’re still seeing hendricksons, apple caddis, tan caddis, and a few quill gordons on the colder water sections. The hatching was decent on some rivers in between the rain. We’re going to be much cooler today with the air temp only hitting 63 degrees. That and the cooler night will help the water temps on the lower river sections. A mix of clouds and sun with wind 10 – 20 from the North as this front pushes through.

Delaware River Report: May 16, 2022

We had some rain late in the evening that bumped the flows on the Eastern drainage. Not much but something. It wasn’t enough to bump the flow on the West Branch and we are tarting off about the same as yesterday. Today will be cooler hitting 74 degrees. We may see some severe thunderstorms with high winds and maybe even some hail so keep that in mind while planning your day and have a safe out. Hopefully the heavy storms miss us. The march brown hatch is picking up (that one is usually a bit sporadic) and we’re still seeing hendricksons, apple caddis, tan caddis, and a few quill gordons on the colder water sections. The water temp in Callicoon peaked at 70 degrees again yesterday so if you’re fishing down river check the temps first.

Delaware River Report: May 15, 2022

We had a little rain overnight that gave the Beaverkill flow a slight bump. The rest of the system is starting off about the same as yesterday. We do have decent cloud cover this morning that may develop in to a few storms this afternoon. The rainfall total looks negligible again. 77 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the south. Hendricksons, apple caddis, and march browns / gray fox are on the water. We’re seeing some of the tan Hydropsyche caddis show too. The cloud cover and rain may push some olives too. There have been some spinner falls and caddis in the mornings on the hot days. The bugs seem to be coming in flushes in the afternoon. The water temp in Callicoon peaked at 70 degrees yesterday so if you’re fishing down river check the temps first.

The release from Cannonsville remains 400 cfs. Yesterday was a mix of xlouds and sunshine. There was some fishing early in the day as the apple caddis work their way up the system. Hendricksons are still here with some blue quill spinners hanging on. March browns are also moving up river as the water temps increase. Today will be warm but we should have good cloud cover. The air temp will hit 78 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South. We may see some thunderstorms in the afternoon but any rainfall looks insignificant.

Delaware River Report: May 13, 2022

The release from Cannonsville remains 400 cfs. The flow at Hale Eddy is 487 cfs. Yesterday the hatches came later in the afternoon followed by spinners in the evening. That makes sense on those bright sunny days. Today looks a little better with some cloud cover and maybe a light non consequential rain shower. The air temp will hit 78 degrees with wind from the south 5 – 10 mph. Hendricksons are still making up the bulk of the bugs but there are March Browns showing. Some caddis were around in the afternoon. The water temps are creeping up which should push the hatches.

The releases have cu t back again and the flow at Stilesville is 383 cfs. The flow at Hale Eddy is 490 cfs. Hendricksons, apple caddis, blue quill spinners and quill gordon spinners. Add some March Browns and Gray Fox to your boxes. Keep an eye out for the smaller #16 hendricksons. Nymphing has worked early before the hatches. This is the weather that get the caddis active mid morning so don’t discount early dry fly possibilities. Spring missed us and we’ll hit 80 degrees with sunshine today. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: May 11, 2022

We’re looking at the third summer type day in a row. We’ll hit 77 degrees with sunshine and 5 – 10 mph wind from the North. The fish are eating on top but the bright sun and clear water have made them a little spooky. Presentation and approach have become more important than what we’ve dealt with so far this season. Hendricksons, apple caddis, a few quill gordons, and some blue quills are still on the water. Nymphing has worked early before the hatches but you also may see dry fly shots with caddis before the mayflies hatch. It definitely feels like a spinner evening. The release from Cannonsville was dropped slightly and the flow at Stilesville is 479 cfs. That gauge has been reading a little low. The release is likely 500 cfs. There is no significant rain in the 10 day forecast so conditions should stay the same through the weekend.

T0day will be a lot like yesterday with bright sunshine and the air temp reaching 74 degrees. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. Hendricksons, apple caddis, a few quill gordons, and some blue quills are making up the bulk of the hatches. Some parts of the river will have the smaller “X” hendricksons hatching. Caddis have been active on some sections midday. This is definitely spinner weather so have some rustys ready and don’t get off the river too early. The flows are about the same as yesterday so the rivers are in decent shape for floating and wading. There is no significant rain in the 10 day forecast so conditions should stay the same through the weekend.

The warmer air temp and sunshine bumped the water temps throughout the system and some river sections had good hendrickson hatches yesterday. We are also still seeing blue quills, and quill gordons. Apple caddis are definitely hatching on some river sections – especially on the sunny days. The West Branch at hale Eddy finally peaked over 50 degrees. It’s been a cold Spring until now. The rivers are in great shape for floating and wading. We’re starting off cool this morning but should see the air temp hit 70 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be 10 – 15 mph from the North. That should definitely help the water temps.

Wading and floating are now both possible throughout the system. Hendricksons, blue quills, and quill gordons are making up the bulk of the hatches. Apple caddis are definitely hatching on some river sections. Nymphing early has been the best bet until the hatches start in early afternoon. Today will be sunny with a high of 60 degrees.
