Delaware River Report: April 19, 2023
The feeder stream flows have dropped as the runoff has subsided. The releases remain the same so the rivers are starting off a little lower than yesterday. Everything is in good shape for wading and floating. We’re still seeing the normal Hendricksons, blue quills, little black caddis, and stoneflies. Nymphing before the hatches has been productive. It’s chilly this morning so it may take a bit for the water temps to climb today.
The air temp will warm back up tomorrow but today we’re going to see 53 degrees with clouds (maybe some sun poking though). The wind will be back at 10 – 20 mph from the West. It should begin to drop in the late afternoon.

We had a little more rain than we expected yesterday morning. The tailwater flows didn’t really budge. The Beaverkill flow bumped up about 100 cfs which is a good thing since it was getting a bit low. Everything looks good this morning. People saw the normal mix of Hendricksons, blue quills, and olives. The little black caddis and stoneflies are still around in good numbers too.
Today will be cooler with the air temp peaking at 48 degrees. We may see a few negligible rain showers with wind 10 – 15 mph from the West.

We woke up to some light rain this morning but total rainfall will be negligible. Yesterday’s wind was a little heavier and steadier than Wunderground had led us to believe. The was a light mix of bugs but not hatch really stood out. Hendricksons, blue quills, olives, and little black caddis are all around. Nymphing or swinging wets early should be your best bets. If there are breaks in the wind or you find a protected spot there should be rising fish in the afternoon.
The rain this morning should total only .01″. We’ll keep the clouds for a while and then see some sun mixed in during the afternoon. the wind will be back at 10 – 15 mph from the West.

The storms slid around us but were close enough we could hear the thunder. The rain amounted to nothing on the lower West. The release on the West Branch is the same as yesterday. the release on the East Branch was cut back leaving the Harvard flow at 179 cfs. Everything is in decent shape for wading. The West, Lower East, and Main are in great shape for floating and wading. The inflow to Cannonsville is up a little from the runoff. There are some Hendricksons starting but most of yesterday’s fish were landed on blue quills and olives. We still have quite a few little black caddis and stoneflies around too. Nymphing worked well early for some people.
Today looks like another nice day on the water. High of 75 degrees with mostly clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

Delaware River Report: April 15, 2023
The releases from both dams have been cut back again. The West Branch flow at Stilesville is 730 cfs and the East Branch flow at Harvard is 314 cfs. Every river is in decent shape for wading now. The July like weather and sun also bumped the water temps up a few more degrees. We are mainly seeing little black caddis and blue quills. There are still a lot of stoneflies out too. There are some hendricksons being spotted on some river sections. Basically carry all of your early Spring bugs now.
The heat will break and the air temp will only hit 74 today. We have some clouds already moving in. We may see some thunderstorms and .17″ of rain during the afternoon. The ground is dry and the trees are beginning to leaf out so the the rain should soak right into the ground. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The releases from both dams have been cut back. The West Branch flow at Stilesville is 930 cfs and the East Branch flow at Harvard is 617 cfs. This definitely opens up more wade opportunities and is still good for floating. It should also concentrate the bugs and make the dry fly fishing a little better. The Blue Quills and Olives are just starting and should pick up over the next couple of days. There are still a lot of caddis and stoneflies on the water. Most fish are still being landed on nymphs and streamers but hopefully that switches with the warm weather and lower flows.
Yesterday was July hot out there. today loos similar but we may see a few more clouds. The air temp will hit 86 degrees with light and variable wind. We cool back down tomorrow.

The West Branch flows are steady sine it’s mostly release. The East Branch drooped slightly but is still running a little high. Some people are finding a few places to wade on the tailwaters but the best wading is still the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. Nymphs and streamers are still your best bet but there were a lot of stoneflies and caddis out yesterday. The wind certainly did not help at times. We did find some blue wing olives and blue quills so things should be picking up
Today will feel like summer again. We should hit 84 degrees with sun. Wind will be a little more reasonable 10 – 15 mph from the North. The hourly shows the wind tapering down in the late afternoon.

The reservoirs have stopped spilling. Ideally they will keep the release at 1,499 for a couple days to create a small void so we don’t spill again every time it rains. Then drop it slowly to a more reasonable level. Things are looking good and all of the river temps are starting off a few degrees warmer than yesterday. Wind was a bit of a factor but the fish were happy eating streamers with a few taken on nymphs. There are dry fly shots. Keep an eye out in the slow pools and edges during the warmest part of the day.
Today will feel like summer with ‘abundant sunshine” and the air temp hitting 76 degrees. Wind will be 10 – 20 mph from the North again.

The reservoir spills are essentially over. Cannonsville is only spilling 25 cfs this morning. The release is 1,499 cfs. We’ll stay high until they cut the release back. Hopefully they are creating a small void and drop us back to normal releases soon. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in the great shape for wading. The tailwaters are still best fished from a boat. The lower water should definitely help the dry fishing. It’s mostly stoneflies and little black caddis but have some dark blue winged olives with you just in case. Nymphing and streamers are still your best bet – especially if the wind picks up.
Today will be nicer than yesterday hitting 69 degrees with sunshine. We may get some clods in the afternoon along with the wind 10 – 20 mph from the West.

The West and East Branches dropped slightly but still remain high. There is only 156 cfs spilling over Cannonsville. The release is 1,499 cfs. The spill won’t last much longer so the flow will come down to the release over the next couple of days. We should see wadeable water on the West Branch this week. Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day with little holiday traffic on the water.Nymphs and streamers are the best bets still but we’re hearing more people finding fish on stoneflies and little black caddis. The dry fly fishing will improve as the water drops and warms up a bit.
Today should be beautiful hitting 63 degrees with “plentiful sunshine” according to Wunderground. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North.

The West Branch and East Branch have dropped a little more overnight but are still too high to wade. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are finally hitting nice wade levels. Nymphing and streamers are your best bet but there are some rising fish in the afternoons. It’s hard to count on yet but we are finding some. It’s still mostly stoneflies and little black caddis. Hopefully the water continues to drop and warms up a bit pushing the olives.
Today will look a lot like yesterday hitting 55 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the North. The 10 day forecast looks great with warm air temps and no rain until Sunday. That should definitely help the fishing this week.

The West Branch and East Branch have both dropped a few hundred cfs overnight but still remain high. The Beaverkill dropped under 1,000 cfs and will now offer some wade opportunities along with the Willowemoc. The wind was rough yesterday with a raw windchill. Nymphs and streamers till but there were a few fish eating on top. Stoneflies and little black caddis are making up the bulk of the bugs we’re seeing. The wind made holing anchor tough during the gusts.
The wind won’t be an issue today at 5 – 10 mph from the North. We’ll hit 50 degrees with sunshine and a just a few clouds. It looks like a really pleasant day to be on the water.
