Delaware River Report: May 6, 2022

Today’s rain forecast has been downgraded to .17″ over the course of the day. If Wunderground is correct on that it should be a non factor. It will be cooler at 56 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the South. Hendricksons, blue quills, quills gordons, and little black caddis are making up the bulk of the food. The river temps are are up a few degrees across the system.

The Cannonsville release has been dropped and the flow at Stilesville is 1,000 cfs this morning. Check the gauge throughout the day to see if it has been cut back more. That opens up a lot more wade opportunities and is still a good flow war floating. Click on the links below for the latest flow information

Delaware River Report: May 5, 2022

Yesterday’s rain was negligable and the river flows are starting off about the same as yesterday. Hendricksons, blue quills, quills gordons, and little black caddis are making up the bulk of the food. The river temps are looking god and everything seems to be progressing well. We are seeing spinners mixed with the duns mid afternoon. That may shift towards evening as the air temp warms up. We’ll see 68 degrees today with a mix of sun and clouds. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the south.

The West Branch at Stilesville is a steady 1,360 cfs. The reservoirs have stopped spilling. There are now a few wade opportunities over here if you’re a strong wader and careful. It’s not ideal but it’s something. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in perfect shape for wading. Click on the links below for the latest flow information

We’re seeing some scattered showers this morning but the rain total should be negligible at 1/10″. Cloud cover, 63 degrees, and wind 5 – 10 mph from the South make this look like a good day on paper. Hendricksons, blue quills, quills gordons, and little black caddis are making up the bulk of the food. The hatches have been a bit spotty but the bugs are there. The water temps are creeping up so hopefully that pushes the hatches.

Delaware River Report: May 2, 2022

Today looks like a good day to be on the water. Cloud cover early with some light showers possible in the afternoon. The rain totals should be negligible. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. Hendricksons, blue quills, quill gordons, and blue wing olives. Have a few black caddis handy. There are some spinners on the water mixed with the duns mid afternoon. Nymphing before the hatches has brought some fish to the net. The bugs happened a little later yesterday. Probably due to the bright sunshine.

Delaware River Report: May 1, 2022

Yesterday was the best wind day we’ve had in a while. At times there were some unpleasant gusts but overall we’ll take it this Spring. Nymphing is working well before the hatches. Flies that match the size of the predominant insects are working well so #14 – 18. Hendricksons, blue quills, and olives are making up the bulk of the hatching. There are also some quill gordons and little black caddis around. We haven’t had great spinner fall evening weather yet so some spinners will be mixed with the duns mid afternoon. Today looks like a great day to be on the water with sunshine, a high of 68 degrees, and wind 5 – 10 mph from the South. We have some rain in the forecast this week but the totals should be negligible.

Delaware River Report: April 30, 2022

The wind made yesterday another tough day on the water. The bugs were there but it was tough to catch a break. Most fish were landed on nymphs and streamers but a few people got lucky on top. Hendricksons are showing in better numbers and we still have olives, quill gordons, and blue quill on the water. Today looks nicer with the air temp hitting 60 degrees, sunshine, and wind only 10 – 15 mph from the North. While not ideal that’s a much better wind forecast than we’ve had for a while. There will be fish caught on top today. Tomorrow the wind should shift from the South at 5 -10.

All of the river flows are still falling. The West Branch at Stilesville is 1,430 cfs. there are a few wade opportunities over here if you’re a strong wader and careful. The East Branch is high with the flow at Harvard just over 1,000 cfs. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in good shape for wading. Click on the links below for the latest flow information

Wunderground was pretty accurate with yesterday’s forecast. The wind was rough and it was cold. But people landed fish. Most people were nymphing and throwing streamers due to the conditions. Dry fly fishing was really tough but the bugs are hatching in the afternoon if you can find a wind protected area. The wind will be less of a factor once the trees leaf out. Blue wing olives, blue quills, and hendricksons are making up most of the mayflies. There are still some stoneflies and little black caddis on the water too. Today will be another bright sunny day. The air temp will hit 53 degrees with sunshine. Wind will be 15 – 20 mph from the North. So a lot like yesterday. Count on nymphs and streamers.

All of the river flows have fallen back. The West Branch at Stilesville is now 1,400 cfs. there are a few wade opportunities over here if you’re a strong wader and careful. We are still dropping slowly so the wading should improve over the next couple of days. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc are in good shape for wading. Yesterday was a tough day but there were bugs and some fish. The wind, rain, and occasional snow made things a bit uncomfortable but people landed fish. It was a good day to catch some fish in the afternoon and get back inside a warm room early. If you can find a wind break blue quills, olives, and hendricksons are in the mix. Nymphing is picking up and people are still catching fish on streamers. Today will be warmer hitting 48 degrees. We’ll start off with some clouds and a possible snow shower. The afternoon will be sunny with wind 15 – 20 mph out of the North.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling. The East Branch, West Branch, and Mainstem are in fine shape for floating but are too high for safe wading. The flows are dropping. Yesterday looked great on paper but the hatches were a bit spotty. People still found bugs and fish but some river sections fished better than others. If you’re not seeing hatches in the afternoon checkout other rivers or river sections. Olives, blue quills, Quill Gordons, and hendricksons are now on the water. Little black caddis and stoneflies are in the mix too. Today will be much cooler with a high of 43 degrees. There may be a stray shower but there shouldn’t be any measurable amount of rain. The wind is back from the North 10 – 20 mph. The leaves are beginning to pop so the wind should be less of a factor over the next week.

Both Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs are still spilling. The East Branch, West Branch, and Mainstem are in fine shape for floating but are too high for safe wading. The flows are up slightly from runoff but should drop back again today. The Beaverkill flow is right at 1,000 cfs so there are still some wade opportunities there. Yesterday afternoon turned out as nice as advertised with sunshine and less wind then we’ve seen this season. People are catching fish on dries, nymphs, and streamers. The bugs have picked up with blue quills and olives making up most of the mayflies. There are fishable numbers of hendricksons now showing on some river sections. The water temps are climbing which should push the mayfly hatches. Today looks like another good day with some sunshine and air temp approaching 70 degrees. Wind will be up a bit 10 – 20 mph from the South. If the bugs are are there the fish will eat. Look for wind protected areas.
