Delaware River Report: August 6, 2022

There was another pulse from Cannonsville overnight so we are starting off this morning at 668 cfs at Stilesville. The flow has peaked and is dropping back already. It should filter through the West Branch by the afternoon. It’s still at a fine level for wading and floating. Sometimes the pulses knock weeds loose so keep that in mind if you’re nymphing – especially above Hale Eddy. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. Definitely have your small olive box too. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahills towards dark. There are a few caddis around so that might be worth a shot on picky fish. Today will be 88 degrees with a small shot at some afternoon thunderstorms. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

Another pulse from Cannonsville to keep Lordville at 75 degrees

Yesterday’s thunderstorms slid around us here on the lower West Branch. We had some wind and a few drops of rain in the afternoon but overall it was a non factor. There was no pulse from Cannonsville overnight so we are starting off this morning about where we’ve been most of the summer. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahills towards dark. There are a few caddis around so that might be worth a shot on picky fish. We have some cloud cover this morning with a 50% chance of some precip. The total rainfall should be a negligible .13″. 86 degrees with light and variable wind,

Last night’s pulse of cold water from Cannonsville bumped the Stilesville flow to 950 cfs. The flow is already dropping this morning and should be back to normal by the afternoon. The pulse is designed to keep the water temperature below 75 degrees at Lordville. These pulses sometimes knock weeds loose so keep that in mind if you are nymphing. Small sulphurs and cahills are still hatching during the afternoon in the coldest river sections. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahillswith a few caddis towards dark. Today is going to be hot at 93 degrees. We’ll start off with sunshine but should see some clouds move in this afternoon. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South. Wunderground is saying there is a chance of some afternoon thunderstorms so keep an eye on the radar.

The East Branch at Fishs Eddy, the Beaverkill at Cooks Falls, and the Mainstem at Lordville all peaked over 70 degrees yesterday. Give these sections a break until we get cooler temps.

There was another cold water pulse overnight from Cannonsville. The flow at Stilesville has already dropped back to normal. The flow at Hale Eddy is 700 cfs and beginning to drop. That should be back to normal by mid morning. 700 cfs is perfect wadeable so no issues there. We’re still seeing small sulphurs and cahills in the coldest river sections during the day. The lower river sections have been a mix of olives and cahillswith a few caddis towards dark. The rain missed us yesterday. Today will be 87 degrees with sunshine. Wind 5 – 10 mph from the South.

We have some fog this morning but that should burn off. A few clouds will come in with a few afternoon showers. Overall today sounds like a good day to be on the water. We’re still seeing small sulphurs and cahils in the coldest river sections. The lower West had a fair number of small olives and a couple of cahills towards evening. Plus a couple of Isonychias that may make it worthwhile blind casting riffles. The air temp will hit 83 again with wind 5 – 10 mph from the North. Hopefully we do some rain and it pushes the bugs to come a little earlier in the day.

There was a pulse of cold water released from Cannonsville last night but theflow at Stilesville has already dropped back to normal. Hale Eddy is perfectly wadeable and the flow should drop back to normal slowly this morning. Small sulphurs, followed by small olives are making up most of the hatch. There are cahills and Isonychias around too. Nymphing and swinging wets has also paid off mid day. We’ll see a bit more sunshine today with the air temp hitting 81 degrees. Wind will be 5 – 10 mph from the South.

There was another cold water pulse from Cannonsville overnight. Less water than they pulsed last week so it shouldn’t be noticeable when you’re on the river. Yesterday was bright with a little more wind than we would have liked but there were sulphurs and fish eating in the coldest sections of river. We have some fog this morning and should have some cloud cover once that burns off. Small sulphurs, followed by small olives made up most of the hatch. There are cahills and Isonychias around too. Nymphing and swinging wets has also paid off mid day. Cloudy, 83 degrees, and light wind.

The upper river sections fished well again with mid day sulphur hatches. The fish can be a bit picky but they are there and rising. Presentation is more inportant than exact pattern. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives made up most of the hatch. Blind casting Isonychias has brought some fish to the net- especially early and late in the day. Sunshine, 79 degrees, and wind 10 – 15 mph from the North.

We were hit with a few storms yesterday afternoon and some light rain this morning but most of the precipitation soaked right into the ground. The bump in flows is negligible and you won’t notice any difference from yesterday. We do have some thick fog on the water but that should burn off in a couple of hours. Small sulphurs, cahills, and olives made up most of the hatch. Isonychias worked well for some people on the lower West Branch yesterday. We’ll see sunshine early with a few clouds in the afternoon. The high will be 85 degrees with wind 5 – 10 mph from the West.
